Zeitgeist is the only word I can come up with, because it personifies any era and affects everyone living through that time no matter their particular circumstance.

The 1960's is one of the most vivid illustrations of this in recent history.  Everything was going on at once for everyone within the social stratosphere.  The entire world was changing and old concepts were being rewritten.  Move into the 1970's angst, the 1980's political/ corporate restructuring, the 1990's burst of creativity and globalization.  Etc.

Roll the tape to 11 September, 2001 and forward from there and an example of the Zeitgeist once again changes and again, affects everyone no matter their position, only now it has become even more globalized and technological and filled with punditry.  We are none of us immune.
