This is a wonderful and in-depth review as only Mel can do. A great read.

This sounds like an excellent book, Mel, but I agree that the current Ukraine situation could influence how it is viewed.

I always enjoy reading Mel’s articles. Thank you for sharing this one, John. It’s not only a book review but also a commentary about a horrible situation that’s currently taking place in our world. I liked the combination very much and think it’s an important one.

    Mel...
I must say I've never read a book review quite like this one.

I commend you for keeping my interest.

It's sad that you finished reading this book right before the invasion of Ukraine.

And yes...I'm certain there are Russians who are dealing with awful neighbors giving them a hard time here in the U S.
    That part is also sad.

I loved the story about you and the comrades at the local pub. It shows that beneath those fine layers, we are all just people.

People whom given the chance can enjoy each other's company...alot better than with the Americans who should understand life.

You did a wonderful job on Writing this one despite the ongoing conflict.

I enjoyed reading this book that I bought Towles’ other book, too. I must say, I enjoyed even more Mel’s review, of how he read the book during breaks. I like the flow of the writing from the Songkran experience to historical vignettes and to what is happening in the U.S. now but not losing the focus on the review. Such great writing, I think.
