Rubber trees are planted for the production of latex, not usually for shade, although clusters of them planted may provide a sort of a shade, but the leaves are too sparse, unfortunately.
Try to protect a young tree from an the elements, and at about 3 or 4 years old plant it out in the garden, with some wind protection. Once its settled down, it'll last forever. Just don't plant it near a house, walls, or plumbing.
