Is it better for the grass to rake up large amounts of pine needles or leave them over then Winter?
Pine needles, leaves and the like can kill grass. I would rake them up if you want to have good grass. If they are not too thick, you can mow them over a few times to break them up so they don't smother out the grass.
Pine needles leach a substance into the soil that will kill grass. Nothing will grow there for quite a few years after. You should always keep pine needles especially, raked up. Other leaves will kill the grass also, so you should get the lawn cleaned up for winter.
