Roses are the great symbol of love, because they looks really lovely in all the colors.

This question is for 2uesday or anyone else who grows roses out there: How did you prepare your rose plants for winter?
I always cut them back after first frost very low. I mulch heavy around the base and continue to put my coffee grounds on them all winter. I may again take another few more cuts back in early February for shaping. When they start to leaf out, you will only to wait patiently for that first bud to appear before its time to start making bouquets again. Oh and stop fertilizing in August each year. Golfgal is also a Master Gardener.
Hi Golfgla. Thanks for replying!
Haven't done the coffee grounds. Will have to try it.
Last year to winterize them, I made "collars" out of newspaper and filled them with mulch, just to try something new (and because I thought we might have a tough winter--we didn't!) Ours are coming out now so will have to prune them soon, probably this weekend.
Would like to try something different for fertilizer during blooming. Any suggestions?

Buds and Bloom or something of the like that has higher phosphorous. Bone meal is also good but not as highly concentrated. You want to feed the root system of bloomers. Nitrogen is for foliage as you will get lots of leaves and fewer buds. That is good for any tree, shrub or perennial. Our Annuals like nitrogen. Espoma products work well.
Thanks, Golfgal. I volunteer at a local park, taking care of their rose garden. (I'm a MG, too.) There are about 55 bushes, including knockouts, rugosas, and teas. Unfortunately, we get few supplies--homemade mulch once a year (never enough) and two tubs of fertilizer. Still, we need to feed the blooms since lots of people like to get married there. Will have to price Buds and Bloom. Have not tried it. You have a lot of good info. Maybe next winter, I'll collect coffee grounds for the "cause." Thanks again! DF
I love these little yellow roses. Sundance Kid StoryBook Roses. They survive in containers year round in my zone 6 garden. No disease problems and very low maintenance. What could be better?
This is a very pretty thread, and I enjoyed the pictures on this Spring-like day....
However, I think I'll go find a thread where everyone is talking about Google, rather than roses. They're kind of irresistible these days.

I got pretty upset in another forum post about MFA junk.It costs all of us honest folk money and time. We hate it, Google hates it, but it goes on.It goes on right here. A little HubHopping will turn up reams of it. It's not illegal, the most you can usually do is vote it down,...

What kind of bird is it?We have had about six hours of thunder and rain off and on. Out in the sage brush is a bird that seems to be enjoying the coolness of the now misty rain and the sweet smell of the sage. It is happy, with a lovely song I have not heard before. It is repeated over and ove:. 5...

We all know that a lot of guys can be a bit... Blunt sometimes. Not very romantic. Some on the other hand are really sweet. But for some strange reason, most girls (me included) tend to not like the overly sweet guys. (Yeah we're not going to make it easy for them) For me what really swipes me off...

I believe Kamala pushed everyone of Trump's buttons in the debate. She was in her former prosecutor mode. She was calm and looked at Trump many times. He never looked at her once. She acted as if she was in a court room and talking to the jury about Trump. She had him on the...
