If you just replaced a window air conditioner then sadly there is no tax credit for that. If you replaced your central air conditioner you can get up to 1,500 in tax credit. But the new untit must meet certain criteria. For the criteria you can go to ase.org/taxcredits.
You can get a 30% credit for new central air conditioners. Requirements for a split system: EER= or > 13; SEER = or > 16. For a package system: EER = or > 12; SEER = or > 14.
Ask the contractor for these numbers. The credit max is $1,500 and is available for 2009 and 2010.
