A taxpayer can continue to benefit from the joint return rates for 2 years after the death of their spouse. To qualify the widow must have paid over half the costs of the household with a dependent child in it. After 2 years you use head of household or single. If you do not qualify as a widower then you file single or head of household. Hope this helps!

can I file single after being widowed in 2009, but I got remarried in 2010?I still have my former married name; Social Security and driver's license have not been changed yet.
