Given the current economic situation worldwide, are you better off or worse off than your parents?
I'm definitely better off but that's because my parents had many financial struggles throughout their lives that led to evictions and frequent moves. My Mom's income is still below the poverty level which at this point is actually a blessing because it means she's eligible for Medicaid to help pay for her medical bills.
I think i am slightly better of than my parent's were, but not by much.
My parents, ( long, long, ago divorced ) saw the " boom" of post WW2.............they saw the economic boom of their generation.........the housing booms.............the auto oriented America,,,,,,,,,,,the building of the interstate America, the newness and developing of the shopping malls.
My parents...................long, long ago divorced............are the diversity of America............My Dad has prosphered, my mom barely eteches by.......
I embrace, and welcome, encourage, ideas forgein to either of them..........
I am at my very best, in my garden, raising my own meat, gathering my eggs, raising my veggies...........feeding a calf....milking a goat...................yet, I welcome, Facebook, the internet, computers..............things that they fear...........and are at a loss with......
I long for and relish the traits and SKILLS of my Grandparents, yet, ask the advice of my "technogical" versed children........
My Dad has more money, yet, it is I who has more skills, more 'how to" knowledge.
I think that I will last longer on my "know how" than my Dad will on his money.................My mom, will face her poor choices.
I fear for my parents and trust in my own children.
It is a terribly diverserd world that we live in.
( I am entering my 50's, and interested in the thoughts of those in my generation)
I think I am worse off than my parents. But, they struggled from time to time. Now, it is my time to struggle.
I am worse off than my parents were. They were left some inheritance from my grandfather, my father made a very nice living and had money until their later years. I had no inheritance - my mother spent most of it. I planned on staying in my marriage of 20 yrs. but then hubby and I divorced..he ended up fine, and I ended up struggling to get by. Working on changing all that now!
Financially, I am much worse off than my parents were because I am a student. Neither of them ever attended college but were able to live the middle class dream with stable employment and pensions (which are nearly extinct now). Shockingly, I think my grandparents had it even better. My grandfather has been collecting his railroad pension since 1984. I expect to do very well for myself after grad school. However, even with an advanced degree I expet to live at roughly the same station they have enjoyed, perhaps a little higher on the hog. It's all going down hill in my opinion.
