When you go shopping, do you ask for a discount before you buy?

I think it's a great idea! I shop a few stores where I know for sure they will do this, so I always ask.
It depends what mood I'm in and what kind of shop it is. On large purchases, it's always worth a go. When we needed new hall and stair carpet, I got the price down from £1,100 to £830.
One time in a jewellers, I commented that their shop name was the same as my surname, and jokingly asked for a relative's discount. They gave me 10% off. I recently discovered that the original shop owner is indeed a distant relation!
