The UK royal family are they a status symbol that the world envys or are they a bunch of free-loader
The UK royal family are they a Status symbol the world envy's or are they a bunch of free-loaders ?
There are differing views in the UK about the royal family I was interested to know what other younger nations thought about our royal tradition was it envy or a commodity we could do without
I laugh at the sad envy people have over the Royal Family, they offend nobody and work a lot harder than the true freeloaders who expect the state to provide for them without lifting a finger. I dislike the lazy scum who sit on their arses all day moaning about people who have what they want but cant be arsed to go out and work for it, so what if some people are rich so what if some people have things if they are prepared to put their wealth and position forward for causes and the betterment of an ever growing self centred society. When I pay taxes I want them to go towards state figures, hard working bankers and lawyers, accountants and other state funded careers where the pressures often determine that they earn the benefits they get not to freeloaders , why are people soooooo jealous that they cry envy. And what is England without a Royal family. Nothing.
As a British colonist. I must say, off with their heads! And please, get this disgusting woman's face off my money!
Wow, this question garnered a lot of strong answers. I don't think they are free-loaders, nor do I think the world envy's them. British royalty is a historical tradition, and I think the bulk of the British people care about them and support the monarchy.
I agree with DonDWest off with their heads. They caused more than 200 years of suffering and torture to us. They killed our men ,raped our women, they even slaved our children. They stole all our jewels.
Status symbol my foot.
From an American POV....it's hard to understand why this family is still being supported at this point in time. It doesn't make any sense.
The queen pays taxes, the Prince of Wales pays taxes, they run profitable businesses. the queen is a focus for patriotism, not a bad thing. The government pays about 60 million a year to pay for official royal engagements, household, etc. but the royal family brings in a huge amount of money annually from tourism, etc. I don't think they are freeloaders. They are rich enough in their own right, I sometimes wonder why they keep up the act. Maybe they like being the center of attention. I do wonder how bright the Duke of York is, and of course his ex-wife is definitely a freeloader. Her kids look as though they will be the same, entitled freeloaders.
I often wonder what is really they roll.(can they pardon anyone from being send to the (Gas chamber) like here in the USA, the Governer can pardon a prisoner for a crime they have committed.
I wouldn't agree with the freeloader comment, maybe they are earning they keep( I saw a documentarie recently about following the sugar trade way back to slavery and who profited from all the money from owning the slaves, how sugar was such a big investment, only kings and Queens could have enjoy the luxuries of a cube of sugar.
back in those day of slavery.
From what gather from the internet Elisabeth is not even british ,she is of German decent and almost all American presidents were or are related to her family in some manner.Distantly in some cases.Even many American and british movie stars are related to her. It's all in the family tree. For a good reason I dare say. If,you can't beat them join them.Right!
I'm just wondering if the UK Royal family and their brand might be bringing in more revenue in terms of tourist dollars then whatever expenses they accrue from the taxpayer?
Are they the only two choices? Might they be somewhere in between or even both?
Every family has its share of freeloaders, and the UK Royals are no exception. But they are not freeloading on the UK taxpayer. Neither are they a status symbol, but they unquestionably have status. On the positive side, the UK Royal Family is very good at doing pageantry and formal events, which most Brits and many foreigners enjoy. Look how many people around the globe watched the recent wedding of William and Kate.
The Royal Family gives a sense of history and national focus to each of us, and there is a pinnacle of permanence that a presidency would not provide. The Royals do not rule or make political decisions any more but they do provide a kind of comforting glue that makes us proud.
They are benefit scroungers with no idea of what reality is. Ask them to live on the minimum wage for a month then see how they do. They stand for everything I despise. Obscene wealth despite much of the world living in poverty and killing defenceless animals for entertainment.
Well they do work, and the Princes are both in the army which seems to have been overlooked by some here. I don't agree with the stuff like fox hunting, but I do respect the hard work they put in day to day, supporting charities, visiting countries that need support, (e.g. third world) and simply doing 'walkabouts'. This is work, and they rarely get days off in spite of what many assume.

The books Burke's Peerage & Baronetage and Burke's Landed Gentry have, for 175 years, recorded the genealogies of the UK and Ireland's titled and landed families. Often referred to as 'the aristocracy bible', these are without comparison as a genealogical reference to the influential figures...
