That's an awesome question! I think all media try to attract large audiences that will increase their ratings.
I believe people are generally attracted to controversy, so stations try to broadcast stories that will provide a platform for people to easily form opinions.
Hiring critics that both advocate and oppose a certain issue challenges viewers to examine their own thoughts.
