How do you evaluate the democracy in India? What are the challenges for this largest democracy?
I want more responds from persons other than Indian
Being from the UK I know very little about democracy in India, other than what I read online; so it’s extremely difficult for me to make an informed decision.
However, from what little I know of the Indian democratic system it seems to me to be a lot more democratic than the American system which seems to stifle small political parties in favour of a two party system. I get the impression that under the Indian system all political parties have an opportunity of democratic representation; in many ways, similar to the democracies in Britain and across Europe.
So in that respect, I think India has great potential for the future, for being one of the more democratic nations in the world.
As regards the challenges; the extremists are the biggest threats to any democracy. History has shown that an extreme left wing party in power can lead to communism, and an extreme right wing party in power can lead to fascism. The European Union for example, because of the way Hitler came to power, has an inherent fear of extreme right wing politics; hence ‘Article 7’ written into its laws, which is designed to curb human rights abuses in the event of an extreme right wing government assuming too much power at the expense of democracy and free speech.
The EU has never fully used the provisions under Article 7 but their use have been threatened on several occasion over the years against democratically elected extreme right wing governments who have started to dismantle human rights; and fortunately to date through diplomacy their actions have been tempered.
So I guess the message for any democratic nation, including India, is to have provisions in place to safeguard against extreme governments (left or right wing) from assuming too much power by stifling human rights and ultimately democracy itself.
If I’ve got the wrong impression from what little I know about the Indian democratic system, please enlighten me.
Thanks for sharing your view. As you said, Indian democracy feeds different ideas and political parties. That means it ensuring plurality. But the presence of extremists are not good at all.
India has always been known for having a successful democracy in place. They have also been allies with the U.S for many years. The biggest challenge India faces is helping the poor in poverty stricken areas, but the U.S also has a lot of the same problems and so do most countries.

Do you think if political parties didn't exist that governments would be better off? With that said,...

Sanders' positive comments about Cuba's socialism prompted a look around.I found plenty of anti-Bernie thoughts, but I kept looking until I found one that I thought was least biasedMy thoughts:First, Cuba has a lot of problems, and not a few of them are caused by American sanctions. So, we are not...
