Should negative advertising in political campaigns be banned?
If you want to win you dig up dirt on the other guy. If you can't find any you make some up. This way you don't have to talk about issues. Does that help you understand politicians any better?
The reality of this question is "who decides" what is negative. In a free society based we cannot afford to hand out such power without losing some of our own rights and freedoms. Democracy does not work that way...it slowly becomes something else that people do not seem to fear but should. We have laws protecting us against slander and lies and courts to interpret them. The backlash against negative advertising should be public opinion and ultimately is if apathy does not overshadow it. In the end, I look at it this way. If a candidate did for an office evaded paying taxes he legally owed and took bribes from lobbyists to line his own pockets, then the fact that it gets advertised in a political campaign is not in my mind "negative advertising"...it goes by another term, "the truth". As a public, we should want to get to the truth. Those in the political and advertising genre walk a dangerous line when they fall short of serving anything but the truth for it will ultimately backfire with the public. As citizens, as voters, we not only have a right to vote, we have a responsibility to get to the truth before we cast that vote. That may require some work on our part but it beats the hell out of allowing certain groups to gain power and then distribute their own brand of the truth via the media...in some circles we call that propaganda...what we really need to believe but not necessarily the truth. In the end, we, as a free people must be the litmus test and the filter for the truth in judging those who want to serve us. WB

Should political campaigns and debates have to be set to a higher standard of behavior?Recent campaigns and debates are looking more like back alley brawls instead of intellectual debates. Is this going to be the new norm?

Are you passionate enough about politics to donate money to political campaigns? If so, do you feel that you got a good return on your investment? And if no, why not? (Personally, due to the content of campaigns, I have never donated money to anyone.)

Where does that money go? I heard Obama is running for re-election in 2012 and is expected to run a billion dollar campaign. I'm just wondering where does that money go? I see a bigger need for those dollars elsewhere, this doesn't make sense to me. It's not just Obama, it is any campaign. They...

If you could change 1 and only 1 thing about the US election process, what would it be?Nothing is off the table - eliminate only 1 thing and state why you chose it and the expected improvements we'd see. Try not to be the person saying they need to put two or three ideas or several connected...
