Well, I did in the most minor way possible, I think. Elected to the board of a Home Owners Association, on the platform that I didn't want it but would do my best if elected. Because I felt I owed some of my time and effort to the group, just as others had already given.
Most, though, I think run for election because of the power or money involved.
I am sure it is an inextricable mix of selfish and service motives.
