The National Rifle Association is rewriting classic children’s fairytales to put guns in the hands of the protagonists.
NRA Family, the group's family-oriented site, has published two of the warped tales so far: “Hansel and Gretel (Have Guns)” and “Little Red Riding Hood (Has a Gun).” The gun loving group claims the altered stories show how classic fairytale characters could have avoided disaster — if only they had weapons.

I found the stories rather amusing, and a far better story to read to young ones than the original ones.
Of course, I was one of the "Hansel's" - at 14, out with a gun to bring home the meat for the next month or two. One of those "armed kids" you mention that the NRA wants.I too remember that tale , I would rather Hansel had a gun too, could have used it earlier against that evil socialist witch!
Alas, in the new book he only keeps it ready while the witch sleeps. However, the townspeople then come (with more guns) and put her in the same cage she had the two boys in.
Same with Red Riding Hood - both she and grandma only threaten the Big Bad Wolf - unlike the original, no one is eaten or even killed.I know the Hansel and Gretel from displaying it a few times. The story is about warning children about child molesters. Many schools wanted to ban it, wail the children said the adults don't get.
Guns is a different story, for the all dangerous adventures adrenalin junkie experiences I've had around the world. A gun cocked to my head gave me an overwhelming helplessness from plans A to Z. I've been attacted by wild dogs, monkey, bears and mugged by thieves and worst the Government without much harm. A gun requires little skill and designed to kill, game over by a fool or child whose brain or experiences are not developed.Yes, it requires some skill and knowledge. So do fists, feet, knives, swords and sticks. Of all the weapons we might use in defense, the gun probably requires the least training, though.
The alternative is the fairy tale altering of reality that the left is using indoctrinating our children to view the honest ,law abiding MASS majority of gun owners and sportsman as evil murderers ! Period . .......Its happening right in most elementary schools today !
I have been seeing this for thirty years .We use to bring guns to grade school on the bus and carry our bullets in our pockets for rifle training. I was trusted to carry a gun to go hunting and for protection as a child. Living in the wilderness here there are black bear, timber wolves, badgers and brush wolves that normally live in harmony with people, but you don't want to come between them and their cubs.
I come face to face with potentially danger animals, but I was taught at a young age to show no fear (they can sense fear) and don't look them in the eyes (no intimidation). They are more afraid of people then we are of them and will run away if they don't know you. Its worked every time so far.
I don't have the heart to shoot anything unless I'm hungry (which I'm not), or unless it was to protect myself or someone else. I do like to target practice for recreation. Its just normal.The NRA used to all about safety. Now that they are ran by the gun manufactures and did a 180 degree about-face and became a bunch of lunatics that push for gun sales, period!
I support people being able to own guns and carry them. However those cartoons do some ridiculous & I don't think children should be carrying guns around. I think the NRA overthinks gun rights as much as the liberal people trying to ban them. I am just a normal person I don't care. I just wish I could legally carry a gun around to protect myself because in california there are some bad places, trust me. However I do not carry because of the laws. Not a time to rant, but as someone who thinks guns should be allowed, I don't like this.
This is the common sense position. I am not anti-gun, but it is ridiculous to suggest that children would be safer carrying guns.

A bit too extreme for children. I am ex-military, female and agree with NRA on having guns. Tyranny will come in...history repeats itself if we have no protection. Teaching it to little ones? I would rather teach them myself and keep the storybooks the same.

1. I'ts a no brainier (pun) I have 3 times more chance to kill myself, than to kill some else to start with.
2. Then have a greater chance to someone I know, than to kill a criminal.
3. And then have a more chance of killing himself for killing someone else.
4. Let's go into killing cops or the US Military, for sure I will kill myself again

I wasn't actually able to read the stories. The links don't work (taken down, perhaps?). In any case, the most accurate version of Hansel and Gretel with guns would be for Hansel to accidentally shoot his sister while trying to clean his gun. Or, his mother.

The topic at hand is whether or not putting guns in the hands of children, as illustrated in the NRA stories, would make children safer from predators. My parents were born in rural Arkansas and they hunted and fished to put food on the table. This continued after we moved to Oregon over 50 years ago. However, my parents were also smart. When they were not hunting, the guns were in a locked cabinet, in a locked bedroom, and the ammo was somewhere else. I don't know where to this day. They never thought of guns as protection for themselves. EVER. In fact, my dad often said that the only way a gun could be used as protection is if you had it loaded and easily accessible, and he wasn't willing to do that with kids in the house. Heck, he wasn't willing to do that after all his kids were gone, because he figured someone would come in and try to steal it.
Some families were not as smart as mine. I had a childhood friend who accidentally shot his own brother after finding his dad's gun, finding the bullets (which were stored separately), and loading the gun. Again, his dad didn't keep guns for protection, but for hunting.

I am saying that common sense tells us that for guns to be an effective way for children to defend themselves against predators, they would have to be armed when they are out and about without their parents. This would not make children safer. Most parents can afford at $35 gun for their children. For ones who can't afford a gun the NRA could provide because they can make profit selling $10 per bullet. Welfare can help because they save by less bodies to pay out to. IF every kid has a gun, it would put the fear of God toward preverts, some gays and bully kids.

Dear Lovers of the NRA. It's okay to love someone with flaws. No one is perfect, including those you love. True love is acknowledging the shortcomings of your object of affection, and still loving them, warts and all. The NRA is wrong to encourage children to carry guns. Just say it. You'll feel better. And you can still love the NRA.

I've go a beach in Arizona to sell you , And you know what , given the general anti gun ,face book , mentality around here ,you would by it . The NRA has done more for older children's training around guns than most parents have .

It was a while back maybe 40 years ago but I managed apartments in Phoenix and I had a "bad" guy try to come through my door because I evicted him as per the owners orders. He ripped open my screen door and just before he came in the main door he saw I had a rifle pointed right between his eyes. Guess what? He stopped while I called the police and he was arrested for breaking and entering. Another time was in Hawaii when a guy came down to my house, drunk, and called me out because of all the ridiculous things for his dog to mate with mine. I stepped out the door to a Hawaiian about 6'6", 300 pounds full of drunken courage. I showed him my Stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum. Guess what? He sobered up really quickly and walked away. I never saw him again even though I lived there for another two years and he lived four doors away. No cops necessary!

What has that got to do with anything? When was the last time your home alarm reported an actual intruder? When was the last time you used the jack in your car to change a flat tire? Your medical insurance likely has a yearly cap (that you pay for) - when was the last time you used it all?
We all take precautions, but always hope we will never use them. Plus, of course, a gun has a lot more uses than self-protection - can you say the same for a home alarm system? Or health insurance?
So think again about demands for the last time someone, anyone, used a gun purely for self protection. It's but another red herring in the battle to control others when there is no valid reason to do so.
