With unemployment high and a weak economy, what's the best way for a candidate to "stick out"?
Know the constituents and directly address their needs. People are tuned in today. They recognize BS when they hear it. Most voters have a cynical, negative view of politicians. That's why the candidate must come across as for the people and not for power mongers or special interests. Scott Brown and his pickup truck won by recognizing this. It remains to be seen if Brown caves in to the monied interests.
