My knowledge of the bill is that it is an attempt by Capitol Hill to help curtail the incidence of intellectual piracy. My worries are the bills are strongly backed by the entertainment unions and by the entertainment industry.
I have heard many horror stories that the SOPA bill and others like it will severely affect writing done on the internet. The scope of the bills are wide and I feel that too large of a net is being cast. Even HubPages stated that these bills have a possibility of shutting down the site.
The gist of SOPA and PIPA are that the Federal Government wants to own and control the world, period.

I just heard about these bills and read that they will send anyone to jail for a max of 5 years. This is if you access any content which is copyrighted more than 10 times in a 6 month period.
