What would a conversation between George Washington an Barack Obama look like?
A meeting between the greatest and the latest president would be monumental. What do you think could happen.
George, Did you get the email I sent you last night about the cyberterrorism threat to the United States' computer and Internet infrastructure that could employ hand held mobile devices using GPS technology?
Barack, What on earth are you talking about? There are a number of English language words that you just spoke that I do not understand? email, cyberterrorism, computer, Internet, mobile devices, GPS technology???
George: Could you ask your security detail to step out, please?
Barack: Can I ask why?
George: You'll see. It'll only take a minute. You may want to have the Steward bring some ice and some bandages when I let them back in.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha! It would be like this. "Get me some water please."
President Washington had his faults, to be sure. He was patrician and overbearing during a period in history where that was viewed as a demonstration of strength. I guess, in this context, he would not be aware of a whole world of advances of which President Obama would be familiar. Nevertheless, on the plus side, George lived through and experienced first hand the foundation of our great nation, including the deliberation and completion of the Constitution. As the first president he had to establish patterns and precedents for the office that rumble through history down to today. Washington was aware of the responsibility he bore and brought to this monumental task two qualities that helped our country - iron clad and unshakeable integrity and a disciplined and decisive morality.
Because of how emotionally charged any discussion of President Obama is, I will only work with his positives. He is a bright man, and he would probably be properly awed by the presence of the First President. He would probably have a ton of intelligent and direct questions about the meaning of some Constitutional questions. George would provide some much needed clarity because, after all, he was there.
Of course, just as Jesus said that people won't listen even if someone comes back from the dead, it is unlikely that the meeting would be productive. As it is, we have volumes of reflections and clarifications on the Constitution from the people who were there, and modern politicians tend to do whatever will bring them the most votes anyway. As long as being elected is more important than upholding the Constitution and helping the country I am afraid that the input of President Washington will not help us much.
