When the European common market was created not only did they have in mind advantages in trading but also the building of a power that will compete with the hegemonic U.S.. The BRICS has the same goals. Now if it scares Europe, it is their problem after all since it was a private circle. Nothing impeded it to enlarge its frontiers to other countries. It is fair that another, third economical, political platform influences the international scene.
The European economies get along quite well with the emerging BRIC countries. Overall the EU trade balance is levelled. Apparently there is lots of stuff that can be traded for cheap Chinese plastic toys.
To be more specific for the northern European countries: BRICs are nothing to be afraid of. The BRICs are an opportunity, a really good opportunity.
Please don´t expect me to say differently, i live in an economy with 1% of world population but 10% share in world trade. The more BRICs, the better :-)
