Do you think that we should close the Gitmo - (United States Naval Station Guantanamo Bay)?
Why or why not? lots of issues like ten years awaiting trials for some etc..
No. There is too much unfinished business that needs to be taken care of there.
GITMO allows the USA a location to hold non-citizens who have proved to be a threat to America or its allies rather than bring them into the borders of the USA. Many who want it closed believe it is nothing more than a place of torture and if it closes, there will be no torture....flawed thinking. Those who are bent on the destruction the USA require some level of persausion in order to gain the critical information necessary to protect all of us. To ignore that fact and assume that getting rid of this location will make everything okay is to be naive. ~WB
I believe Guantanamo is forever tainted by the torture scandal and more oversight is certainly needed to ensure our people do not mistreat these prisoners. I also do not believe in indefinite detention without trial. Guantanamo's history is a very sad testament to the US. Torture is torture, call it what it is. If we say we are better than that, we should prove it with full transparency. I would be thrilled to see Guantanamo closed or at the very least completely restructured.
I have no problem with the existence of Guantanamo. It is a highly efficient and sophisticated detention center. However, I am not supportive of holding people without trial. I believe we can have military not civilian trials for enemy combatants. But that does not mean we have to close Guantanamo.
