Moore Tornado Death Toll
Is it ethical for officials to announce a death toll, as was done earlier regarding the Moore tornado, for officials to retract it, explain that it's difficult to "estimate" a toll, and then allow media to state that a certain number (40) of additional deaths are expected?
0I live in Moore, so I was glued to the TV while this tornado ravaged my city. I don't know if it's a "moral" issue per se, but I think officials should wait until they have all the necessary information to make a judgment. Issuing death tolls too early just leads to later retractions, like you said.
I pray that you are well and wish the best for Moore. Moral, no. But whether ethical or not, indeed. It just seems a little awkward or clumsy.
An interesting case is when they announce a death toll for an elementary school or somewhere similar. If the initially announced death toll is high, and turns out to be wrong, it caused the parents unnecessary suffering.
Sooner. Totally agree. Media reported 51 dead and 40 more expected. 24 hrs. later, actual toll was 24. That's still horrible, but what about those 67? Shouldn't that be called "inducing panic"?
I think the media is willing to risk the issuance of a retraction in order to be first with a story. That goes for any story. News media has no conscience, no compassion and certainly no remorse for releasing incorrect statements at inappropriate times.
None of these numbers should be mentioned unless confirmed by their examiner. This isn't an election that has projections of results. This is real life, with real people that have real feelings.

There are already enough threads about Coronavirus, so I didn't want to do this one.But it is necessary. Some people here, in an effort to defend Trump or criticized Obama (whichever is it) and/ or minimize the threat of Coronavirus, keep comparing H1N1 death toll vs Coronavirus (so far) deaths....

I myself have never bought the lie about us not losing as many soldiers under Obama. I would be more inclined to believe the true numbers are hid from the public view.It is good to see the leant Left still tallying the death toll daily... --"KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Despite U.S. reports of...

Several of us are from the Oklahoma City area A tornado or several hit today within miles of my home. Please pray for victims and survivors. We have no power. Shelters have been set up. We hid in our hidey holes.
