Is it just human nature for people to take unnecessary risks?

People will put themselves through torture on a television show or contest to win bundles of money, and depending on your circumstances, I understand the logic. Your trying to better your life. As human beings, why do we take risks that are not necessary? Smokers know the dangers of habitual smoking, but still do it, morbidly obese people know the dangers of diabetes, heart disease, and other terminal illnesses, yet will still gorge themselves at Burger king, convicted drunk drivers still get behind a wheel after drinking. Does everyone have the perception "it can't happen to me?"

This is true of the mental conditions of many, I believe it is more and deeper then some people can understand ,they have lost the real and true value of what life really means, and some just do not know ,because many take it for granted. Reality is many will never be born ,  and we life is a gift that is given ,at birth we control nothing ,we develope and grow older physically ,and many just survive their surroundings, The world is in a chaotic turmoil of confusion, but not all are confused ,Our existence our future, our real happiness is not in this system of world affairs , For the bible reveals the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one satan and his  demons, 1 John  5:19 that is why things that should be is not, or love is not where it should be, The earth as we see it today is passing away soon, there was a global deluge long ago because of the same repeated badness and wickedness today, 8 people survived  ,they did not go to heaven since they where declared righteous, No , they started the earth off clean again , but how did it get back wicked, because the same wicked spirits did not die in the flood they are still running rampant in this time of ours and soon to end, The question is will we be counted in as a survivor of the up coming clean up. Satan and his demons will not have an opportunity to interfer with the Govermental position of our king .Psalms 83:18 ,www.jw.org.explains it better and answers many questions along with your bible .

There are many different reasons why people do this.  For example, I am working on a biography project and my subject is an interesting man.  He's had several stints in prison, in different prisons, and has changed his life around.  He's reasoning for doing those things, for breaking the law, risking his life and the life of others unecessarily, was because of cowardice.  We are afraid to endure to the end, so we search for a coping mechanism, an easy way out, an alternative to the reality because we are terrified of the truth, of what is real.  I found his perspective refreshing.

Well, I don't think people who do these things consider them unneccessary risks. The drinking, smoking, and overeating are often addictions. I will stick my neck out here and say that anyone who has gotten three or more DUIs has a serious drinking problem--that this is an indication that they can't control their drinking and they are hence an alcohoic. I see people around me who won't change their eating habits--something you would think would be fairly easy--despite serious health problems. To give up drinking, smoking, and poor eating habits involves a "loss of self"--probably one way to define addiction.

Well my friend I have put myself at unnecessary risk for your freedom.
I guess I am just an ass. I do not claim status here. Not my job. But in my hometown we live among and among men and women who should have died for you. Yep we drink and smoke and we skydive into hell for your benefit or at least we think so. Our Green Berets and Seals do this daily for you.
    And yet you judge them?
How nice you can go to your gym and be all healthy.
Ease up on the judgement calls.

Eric, Im not sure what your definition of unnecessary is, I served in the army myself in the first Desert Storm, our freedom is very necessary.Maybe you should re-read what was asked. From your response, it doesn't appear you understood what was asked
