Why are there still undercurrents of fear and hatred against members of the LBGT community
among so many Americans?
Because many people are raised to believe it is wrong to love another of the same gender. When you're raised believing something, no matter who you know, it stays with you.
It is the same reason there are so many older people now that are still racist. It is just the way they were taught and what they perceive as normal.
Not saying its right, but its the unfortunate truth.
In short it is true of this lifestyle centuries ago, even the bible says so. In Genesis 19:4-7 verse 24 says all the nations where practicing these things, 26 says you are not to do these detestable things. Leviticus 18-22 says you must not .
I so agree to tehgyb ,we are first given law through family. And we perceive this is correct . Until we fully become free moral to decide on our own ! We then discover humans can be wrong rather they are our biological Guadiana or not. But I believe their is always the truth and the right choice to pick from. I believe that we are intrusted to be raised and taken care of until maturity, then we have our own choices .but we do have a perfect law to go by. we do not belong to humans we belong to Almighty God ,Humans play a part in our entrance into this world and well being threw growth. That is why it is important how we view morals and right and wrong. Because in the end the one we all are plugged into that gives the breath of life will determine who keeps it. And if you do lose it for a minute in his time .he is the one to replace it. No human has this Authority.
True but sad religion has done much damage, but people have done the damage themselves.what is pure and clean is tainted. There is never an-excuse to hate. But we are to hate what is bad in the eyes of our Heavenly Father. People custom fit this fact
A lot of people look for sameness in others.
And of course our upbringing, wanting to conform with the majority and the huge negative impact most religions have in how they view the LBGT community plays a role.
First you comment and let every one know your choice! in the post ,nobody has to guess. Next you ask me a question that is none of your business, I do not post personal information about me nor others, that is not privileged information to strangers.
Some people are afraid they'll be "hit on" by them. Some people are afraid of what others may think of they associate with people of the LBGT community. Others fear that general acceptance of LBGT lifestyles will lead to their children joining their community or somehow it will become a contagious epidemic.
Last but not least some believe it's a moral sin and against God's word.
The reality is these people "cherry pick" the sins they're okay with versus the ones they're not okay with. I've heard for example a person who is pro-life state the bible says; "Thy shall not kill" and yet they're in favor of the death penalty or they're having pre-marital sex which is a sin that led to pregnancy to begin with.
They conveniently overlook the "Love thy neighbor as thyself" and "Judge not lest thee be judged." Although I'm no "bible thumper" I seem to recall:
Ecclesiastes 7:20 " For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not."
This is true people care about what other people think! And I think that is part of the problem they care from the physical aspect not the spiritual ,since Our Heavenly Father is a spirit source he is far from their conscious of right and wrong,
Cause we're a scary, fearsome bunch??
I think it's more because as humans we are coded to fear what we don't understand. Love isn't as simple to understand as we think it is, and if someone else's love, or person that they love, is different to ours, it makes us either question ourselves, or take the slightly easier route, and question others.
In questioning it, we find that it is something we don't understand, particularly when different, and therefore think that something must be inherently 'wrong' with it, and therefore fear it. Strangely enough, this is all usually unconscious thought!.
With understanding comes acceptance, fear and acceptance do not function together and acceptance wins out. Or at least that's what is hoped!
A good Example is people in Katrina need help from everywhere , rescue teams where available to all people. People helping people being humanitarians ! no one was saying I am gay do not mistreat me. People came up to the plate of love when it counted
Because people were taught that same sex relationships are a perversion. In other words, it's not normal. It was also confirmed by nature with the reproductive process. Now the global campaign is to change that thinking so that it is thought normal for two men to have sex and two women to have relationships. That will never sit comfortably with everybody because there is something deep inside the psyche of many people that says it is going against nature or it's unnatural, just with the understanding of the birth process alone. To those who are straight, it looks like the media, the laws and the government are trying to greenlight a perversion. That is the point of view of those who are against them. The idea that changing the laws and promoting homosexuality still does not make it a normal behavior. It's really the business of those who live that lifestyle, but some people have a problem with it being in their face every day now that it is being promoted in the media.
And next nobody said anybody was an expert. Show me where I said I was You keep building on an argument that I will not feed into. As I have said before and my last statement to you. What your choice is your business ,and I will end it here.
Because the message "you should be able to love who you want" is a lie in itself. What do we say about the 35 year old woman that falls in love with her 14 year old student? Should we be fighting for her "right" to love who she wants? Some forms of love are just wrong because they come from an imbalance in the brain. Sure, you can sit here and blame religion for the way people's minds are molded. Many people do cling to their beliefs, but on the whole of culture trends in the world, there is a strong majority of countries that tend to agree that homosexuality is a deviation from the way things are supposed to be. It is the opposite of preservation of life as two of the same gender of the human species cannot procreate together. Two "moms" together can NEVER replace the needs that a dad fulfills in the lives of his children and vice versa. Granted, there are single parents from one night stands and so on and so forth, but the rule still applies-one parent cannot replace the needs the other is meant to fulfill. Now, we all know that life isn't always fair and everyone experiences different mental and emotional challenges in life. Sexual confusion is just one of those challenges for some people
I agree little red85, good example of Audult and 14 year old child. I do agree that what our bodies were born to procreate. Yes there are birth defects which may alter people, and just because you have the power to do something does not make it right.
Before the rise of the Abrahamic religions homosexuality was culturally acceptable in most parts of the world. Cultural conditioning is the reason that it became taboo. Survival of the species argument is null as the species is obviously thriving.
We have many generations that reach back far before Moses, also with that history there are others who worshiped the same God as Moses. The other gods that existed goes as far back as Nimrod hunter of men and animals, also resister of the true God.
Yeah, Nimrod is mentioned in the bible and koran, as well as hebrew texts. Kinda makes him Abrahamic, at least in the way that he is thought about.
I mention him because until God almighty established an agreement or contract with the Israelites through Moses , all nations practice many things as listed above in scriptures. The point is people walk and live in the name of their own God.
Or no god at all. Religion is culturally imposed and does not make religious beliefs right, and I have never met anybody who sticks to all of the contradictory rules of the Abrahamic god. Using religion to justify hatred is just ignorance.
People fear what is different, and what they don't know. You could say that the LGBT are the new black. I believe there is still prejudice against black people, but you don't talk about it outwardly. However, they can by contrast outwardly condemn LGBT and use the Bible as a resource.
I don't think it's right to condemn the LGBT because you force some people to live a lie. It could end up that one of those people is your own child. Or, your child may end up unwittingly marrying someone who society has forced to live a lie, like the movie Broke Back Cowboy. What "should" be right thinking ends up causing a lot of unhappiness, can bring out the mob mentality among people and leave a dust bed of evil behind.
People should be free to be who they are and should feel comfortable in their own skin and accepted by all, given equal respect and equal legal rights. This can happen if society lets go of fearing what it doesn't know and what it doesn't understand. This should be especially true where human lives are concerned, since we are a civilization that values human life. Equal value should be placed on the quality of human life as well. That means complete, equal privileges; equal rights; and equal protection under the law regardless of sexual orientation.
Skin color is not a choice . We are genetically born with our features. Which is a ugly thing for people to be racist about. Just as some one handicapped they are not by choice, so this is not equal to race. As you have stated a right to chose.
Hi Kiss and Tales, where in my answer above did I say people have a right to choose skin color or being handicapped? I think my answer dwelt more on what rights people from the LGBT should have, not whether we have a right to choose skin color, etc.
You are correct you have a right to chose your sexual preference, black people did not have a choice to choose their race , example of a handicap person ,not their choice, so that is not an acceptable example to me . I do not know about others.
Kiss and Tales - tell me, when did you decide to be straight? How long did you consider the LGBT 'lifestyle'? Please consider your answers carefully. You will find you did not choose, so why assume we do? We don't - the choice is to accept it or not
To answer your question I was not born with choices ,until I was old enough to make choices . I am old enough to tell you that is none of your business, but you still can air yours which is also your choice and business.
Thats right - not my business. Nor is anyone's sexual orientation your business either. So why make a STATEMENT of fact that it's a choice, when you do not know that. I do not assume you chose to be straight - why made assumptions of choice for us?
You said "- the choice is to accept it or not" why did you use the word choice in your statement . Which makes no since.
The ONLY choice in sexual orientation is whether you accept, embrace and be proud of who you are, or whether you fight it, hide it, and be generally ashamed of it. I CHOSE to be proud of who I am, but I did not choose to be gay - I just am.
"The ONLY choice in sexual orientation is whether you accept, "you are still admitting to making a choice to accept, which means you have to be fully aware of a choice. Why you personaly choose this lifestyle is still your personal business .
K+T - I wonder why people who are not LGBT feel that they can STATE such is a choice as fact, despite most of the LGBT community (who have the experience) stating otherwise. I wonder what make the Non-LGBT such experts on issues not concerning them
Because you yourself has stated and I write quote " The ONLY choice in sexual orientation is whether you accept, embrace and be proud of who you are, or whether you fight it, .these are your own words ,you still said the only choice is! That is all.
Yes, I said choice - in how you DEAL with it, but not how it comes about - sexual orientation is NOT a choice. Please stop twisting my words. You and I are entitled to our opinions, and I wish to leave it at that. I know my truth + thats what matters
The point is you still used the word choice ! How it turns out is not the issue , I was stating your quote as you did say choice, it is not hard for anybody to read what you said. You are posting to me as to look for argument. No need for that.
I said choice, but NOT in relation to actual orientation. About how you deal with it. You are speaking as though I meant in relation to being gay when you mention "choice of lifestyle" - this is very obviously NOT what I meant. Please, just leave it
What I notice is religion can be in the form of anything including sex. It is what you make religion to be. Even your country. True many claim the title and are false to the power. But where did people learn the word of Love?
Not on your own.
GOOD answer I MIGHT ADD! Blunt statement but so succinct and true!
Scared of what another human equal to another human, on the same level inside out, Not to a issues that is centuries old, why was all the rights you claim you should have is not posted as bible base instruction as right, only denouncements its wrong.

How is it fair to judge one group by the actions of a few, but not others? For example, there have been Christian people here who paint all atheists the same. they point to the few who put up hateful billboards and say that is an example of how atheists are. We aren't and I find those signs...

Where do morals come from?Do morals come from the Bible, from man, from reason and logic or from somewhere else? I am intrigued with the concepts of good, evil and morality and how people come to define them in the context of their lives.

Are people really born straight or gay?Do you believe that people are born gay or straight or does society have something to do with it?
