Government's job maintain peace-ensure tranquility-provide freedom-life -liberty , happiness-is it?
This is a good question to bring up. I do believe we are well beyond any expectation of our Federal Government to pay more than lip service to The Constitution. This document was a compromise created to get large and small colonies, with different interests and ideas, to agree on a government. It was intentionally vague and open ended to achieve this end.
What is never talked about is that The Constitution is a contract between the people of 13 independent colonies and the Continental Congress to form a Republic. The authority or established sovereignty of these colonies to create a nation is founded in the Declaration of Independence. The tyranny we face from our Federal Government today is far greater than what the colonists experienced when they rebelled against England: God Bless the Queen.
In my view the Federal Government broke their contact along time ago. The Liberty you ask about will only return when we the people reclaim the sovereignty we possessed when our Constitution was ratified, fire the Federal Government for breech of contract, and reconvene an assembly of State Representatives to determine a new course: God Bless America.
It has the first and foremost job of protecting the people for external threats like invasion, then maintaining order. The police have the job of finding your murderer and trying to prevent riots, but not to protect each person at any given time. That is why we have the right to self defense, to protect our lives since the police cannot.
It has no obligation to ensure one's happiness and in fact cannot. Any state that provides you everything you need can take away everything you have, and if it gives you everything you need, it can demand you do everything it orders in return ... and that is slavery.
