In what simple or obvious way/s can Socrates be added to our 21st century democracy?
We need so much more of the Socratic method in our developing education from kindergarten to Doctorate programs. We have begun for a century to teach what should be known rather than how to know it. We have mass produced our education system to a one size fits all to a point of boredom.
"and why do you suppose that 3 x's 20 x's 13 equals what it does?". "Are you clairvoyant to know such truths? Can you predict the minute before I ask you the question? And obviously how did you know the future of the answer."
Or just plain "Creation and the Bang Bang theory are just as stringently held, what gives some the right to maintain such theories?"
We do not have time to teach like that. Too many writers want to spew the truth rather than ask questions in a communal sense. With such madness of masses flooding our edu. systems our profesorate has become a leader of the common beliefs and not a teacher of the questions that are not well answered.
Winners do not need Socrates as they already possess the ability to question intelligently. Most simply have no clue other that what they are spoon fed in the area of intellectual pursuit and the evolution of our species.
While I do not know personally how the University system is, I do feel like you have expressed, universities are no longer real houses of learning and critical thinking. It is more about indoctrination and politically motivations.
And so much deeper my friend. Socratic dialogue is since before Christ essential to understanding but we kill it.
Educate not in the form of schooling but encouraging "objectively observing, participation to determine various outcomes, reasoning with the outcomes and being able to communicate their findings".
Instruct to seeking cause of effects for revealing the cure requirement.
Live without attachments of any kind except "the love of wisdom".
Those are the ones I can remember without rereading the book which I do not have available.
I agree with you Elijah about learning from your past mistakes (=wisdom) and applying your truth, your personal understanding, to expanding or improving your life and your relationships with others.
Peace is within our grasp. We must grab onto it. Knowing it is hard.
Ok 3Keys, we're together.
Inner peace has always been within our grasp, Eric, now world peace is but the question is who will, once it is here, keep it through the world's [not earth's] termination.
This morning my young son asked why his cereal got soggy with the milk. I questioned him as to what he thought. The word osmosis came up. Why doesn't the milk have cereal in it? Well it does. We will tonight, do a rock and rice. Which will absorb?
