Thanks to the brilliance of John Chau I’m sure we’ve all been hearing a lot about the Sentinelese these past few days.  I saw these posts by Matt Walsh on twitter essentially suggesting that it’s cruel to not colonize isolated tribes.  I’m curious to hear if other people feel that way as well or if most are content to just let them be.

Compassion encourages us to help them live happier, healthier and safer lives.

But that also doesn't mean we should shove certain beliefs down their throats.

I think Matt Walsh's tweets are arrogant. I also think that if he thinks his list of things is what is important in life - he has his priorities mixed up.

Real compassion would be to honor their exhibited desire to be left alone.

You do not miss what you do not know. There is a lot of research out there that proves that humans are no happier (stress levels) today than when they were hunter-gatherers. The stress today is, in fact, higher than what it was centuries ago. Therefore, basing an argument on physical stuff and healthcare alone does not make a good argument.

If they wanted to be contacted they would not be shooting arrows on every person who attempts to get close to their island. Also, getting in touch with them could wipe them all out as they won't be immune to the many diseases and infections the rest of the population is immune to.

There are so many isolated tribes in Brazil that have now come into contact with modern society. The kids from these tribes that have an education have said that they decided to get an education only because they wanted to be able to counter the damage the rest of society is doing to their eco-system. This statement comes from a documentary about a new cocoa bean that is native to a very small region of the Amazon.

They should be left alone as they are doing their best to keep it that way by rejecting any sort of contact: https://www.businessinsider.com/sentine … -islands-3

No one likes to have something forced upon them, anything other than leaving them alone is doing just that and taking away one of the basic human rights: The Right to Seek a Safe Place to Live, because they definitely see anything other than what they know as a threat.

Why would we assume they aren't better off?  Subsistence cultures are typically very happy.  They have been offered plenty of our stuff and they don't want it.

      I do too.

I think the only thing that might be a fair point is the modern medicine bit, but even accessing that compromises their entire way of life.

They want to be left as they are, they aren’t harming anyone, I say let them learn about the benefits of the modern world only if and when they want to.

I also agree that it’s arrogant to presume our way of life is more comfortable or fulfilling than theirs because we have shoes and air conditioning.  The truth is we don’t really know anything about how they live their lives.

For me this is one of those questions that doesn't really have a right or wrong answer. Modern medicine can save them but we don't really know how their bodies will respond. With fewer than 100 left, it may very well be futile. Even in isolation they've survived the wrath of nature with no modern tools or any outside assistance. I do feel that one cannot be absolutely certain, if we would be pushing them towards civilisation or towards extinction until it's been done. Just like with John Chau's moment of madness.

There are too many people out there who think they know just what is best for someone else. You know what that is, right? That's being so arrogant, so full of yourself, that you believe yourself superior enough to say what someone else needs.

And in this case, we're talking about thinking we know what is best for persons we've never met. Never spoken with. And in Matt's case, never ever will.

I usually like Matt Walsh. I disagree here. I know what it is like to just want to be left alone, but no, someone wants to 'help me,' and all they wind up doing is making me miserable.

I never followed him, heard of him, yes. But from the pic attached here, his second tweet is so uneducated, that I would not want to follow him anyway.

He seems to have a huge following (with great power comes great responsibility), yet he makes a statement like this without knowing some basic facts. The tribe does know about modern civilization, they've known for centuries. They may not know about nuclear weapons and computers, but they know there's something very advanced out there. Heck, even European explorers tried to get to them but stood no chance against the arrows.

I can't think of a way to make those people more miserable than to force our modern world on them.

I can agree that they are somewhat museum pieces. They're also people who want left alone. It's just lucky for them there's no precious resources on their island.

I think the Indian government has it right, let them live on their island and leave them alone.  Guess what? If yo think this is wrong the modern world has you blinded to the reality of life without technology.  I'm sure these primitive people have their style of entertainment, medicine, social structure and more.  I bet they are more happy than people in most modern cultures.  Modern cultures have ruined many peaceful happy primitive cultures.  It would be different if these people expressed an interest, but they haven't.

What ! With today's constant need for social reengineering mentality , why leave them alone ?   Are you kidding me ? Look at all the votes that could be added to the liberal voting roles in any progressive party of any nation .  They must be taught by example that independent thought is a danger to their children , their culture , their very livelihoods . They should be force marched to the nearest social re engineering office of the closest "progressive" party . After all , they are apparently an indigenous society are they not ?

For the earnestly progressive and easily offended ,Yes, I'm being sarcastic. Just leave them be , why force the outside world on them , we collectively failed ours and they still have a chance.

Its fine to just let them be.  They clearly don't want intrusion.
