Civil servants and political appointees are government workers or public officers. While a civil servant will work for upward 35-years before retiring, a politician serves only 4-years at a time if he is not re-elected.
While governors are not willing to pay retirement benefits f pension entitlements, special gratuity, and arrears, how come a governor wants to pay politicians serving for only four years a life pension?
The mind beats the imagination. Your thoughts on the challenge?
I don't know about other nations because I haven't read their constitutions but I have in-depth studied the US'. A very important statement in the Preamble United Statesman is general Welfare that means what is needed to maintain what is considered the minimum requirements for life in the nation. That means everyone is required toward together to ensure everyone living in the nation is minimally sustained.
The US Constitution require officials to be elected every two to six years.
Why?
1) Because the constitution doesn't allow the people running to name themselves as candidates for election, per Articles 1.2.2 for Representatives and 1.3.3 for senators, for Presidents and Vices Amendments 12 and 24 say each state chooses Electors to select the candidates from another state for Reps and Sens and either the presidential or vice candidates who are elected by the people of the state to represent their state in the primary election can not be from the state they are chosen to represent.
2) The founders expected a rapid turnover in Reps and Sens.
3) The founders the people in mass to participate do they would be able to know when the governors were in violation of their oaths and have them removed from office for the least infraction of the laws per Article 2.4. If that was taking place in every nation there would not be the multitude of wars all over the earth instigated by the rich's bribes called perks to make them richer being paid to the elected and/or appointed officials. So, until an elected official finds another occupation - our constitution doesn't say but imply those elected out are to return to being We The People - they should be sustained.

Do you think people should have to display an understanding of politics before being allowed to voteI don't mean an in-depth understanding, just a basic one of how government works and what each party/candidate stands for.

No political advertisingWhat if instead of a presidential candidate spending millions on advertising to prove he or she wants to be elected, we just made them say where they stand on the issues? What if all a candidate was allowed to do to promote her or his campaign was to sit for media...

Do you contend that politics is a game and that the average politician whether Republican orDemocrat cares nothing at all about his/her constituents but only his/her self-aggrandizement, celebrity, and next career move?
