When we do something, that is good for us on an individual level, but not accepted by either the society or the family, is it a sin?

Sin is that which binds you ... that which transgresses a natural or Cosmic Law. It is an impediment or obstacle, standing in the way of Truth. Too heavy, perhaps.

Do what makes you inwardly happy, meaning, that which gives your life purpose, makes you strong. Never do what makes you weak.

Unfortunately, parents can 'seem' to be part of the problem. Yoga philosophy does not accept this, perhaps even more so if you are old enough to think for yourself.

Looking towards others for solutions is a subtle refusal of accountability ... a saying that we are weak. The opposite is true, as you are a soul and immortal. Life wants you to manifest your strengths in a way which may be different from others? What do you think is the answer? Listen to the voice within.

Thank you so much manatita. Your answer is wise enough to provide a clarity.
I am pursuing psychology and there we were in a discussion if we have to listen to our inner self or the ones who claim to be our well wisher.
Thank you once again for this clarification.

It is not so straight-forward for many. Naturally the God-seeker will point you at yourself, but the individual will also benefit from the mundane approach, based on his/her persona or character, where he or she is on the ladder of evolution.

Kyler's last two lines is what I was saying .. that it is we who are responsible for our actions. Miekabagh57's answer, can also be interpreted in the same way.

Just imagine that you are one day in Jannah. Allah won't be as interested in your daughter, parents, money, status or whatever, as much as He/She would be interested in how you have glorified God. Makes sense?

That is a question of moral relativity. If you have ten random people strapped to one train track, and one person you love strapped to another, all the while a train is barreling down upon them; is it a sin to save the one you love over the ten random people of no real value to you?

Well, if you simply wanted to watch ten people die, then it is a sin. If you wanted to save the one you love because they have more value, then you are morally relative and made the best decision for the self and your life. If you saved the ten strictly on a number basis, perhaps you find out that all ten were actually sentenced to death on murder convictions.

These questions steeped in mysticism leave things up to metaphor and hypothetical, therefor if we can put them into any perspective we desire then we can justify any action taken or equally label it as a sin. Your end goal is all that matters, the product of your actions and not the perceptions of others or subjectivity.

What an explanation! I am spell bound Kyler. It's just a intelligible and logical way of proving a point.
        Thank you so much dear!
        Lots of love and blessings.

Your other question seems to come under Gender and Relationships. I can look at it there: https://hubpages.com/forum/28

Anupam, the most significant phrase is "at individual level." How do we define it?

It really depends on the situation, if that action of yours does not harm or hurt others then that wouldn't be a sin.
