The Arizona Senator said she made the move to fight what she called a "broken partisan system".
In an opinion piece written for the Arizona Republic newspaper, she said that "Americans are increasingly left behind by national parties' rigid partisanship" and that she hoped to "work proudly with senators in both parties".

    This statement resonated with me:

"We don't line up to do what we're told, automatically subscribe to whatever positions the national political parties dictate or view every issue through labels that divide us."

we do what's right for our state and our country."

She joins Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine as the chamber's only independent senators.

Thoughts?  Can this create a movement? Will it break partisanship? Is she being genuine or self-serving?

We can all hope it will become a movement; anything to break down the rigid partisanship that is destroying our country.

Time will tell if she is genuine or self serving.  Certainly at this point it would appear that all she has to lose is her job.

This thread should be dedicated to Credence2. I have been telling him this for years.

As a caveat, I may be under the influence of 100-proof confirmation bias. I read the link but the pop-up video of her speech was much more impressive.  It's worth a 19-minute watch.

This is the video from your link:

She even plagiarized my 'guardrails' characterizations. And the bit about the filibuster argument sounded like she was reading my notes. ;-)

Do you think she has a chance of being re-elected though without a party to support her?

I wouldn't think so. She's already established herself in politics.  Bernie Sanders certainly has not suffered due to the independent affiliation.

I hope so. Not just for her but also for future "Independents.'

She made an impressive speech and I agree with much of it.  But the filibuster has been an obstacle in this country as it has been used as a weapon by both parties. Sure this can be overcome by true bipartisanship but will that happen?  I am genuinely hoping she has inspired others to join her, particularly some moderate Republicans.

Contrarily, I think she was right. The filibuster has not been an obstacle to governing the country, it has been a safeguard, a 'guardrail' that at least keeps us out of the ditches, even if it can't keep us straight on the road.

She certainly timed her announcement to draw attention to her and away from the Democrats' election results. My question: Can't she be sued for election fraud by not waiting until she is up for reelection to change parties?
