   Mike Pence subpoenaed by special counsel overseeing Trump probes
   
   Former Vice President Mike Pence has been subpoenaed by the special counsel overseeing probes into former President Donald Trump, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
   
   It's not immediately clear what information the subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith is seeking, but it follows months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence's legal team.
   
   Smith was appointed in November to oversee the investigation into Trump's potential mishandling of classified documents after leaving the presidency and obstructing the government's efforts to retrieve them -- as well as a separate probe into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
   
   The move will be seen as a major escalation of Smith's probe into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the election, and suggests that Smith's investigation has entered a more advanced stage.
   
   We'll see what's next, I guess.

      Let's speculate. I'm guessing it ain't about the documents. I'm also guessing that if no more documents are found we won't be hearing much about anyone's documents.
      
      Ipso facto presto . . . it's about the election. Now, could it be about direct conversations in the vein of 'what did he know and when did he know it'?
      
      Hmm . . .
      
      As a bonus, for me, that scenario fits with a prophesy made in another thread; Trump's political influence will take a big hit during the Republican primary race.

   Smith also subpoenaed former Trump national security adviser Robert O’Brien in both of the Trump-related probes, according to a source familiar with the matter. O’Brien has been asserting executive privilege in declining to provide some of the information that prosecutors are seeking from him, the source said.
   
   Trump’s former acting Department of Homeland Security secretary was separately interviewed by Justice Department lawyers in recent weeks as part of the probe into 2020 election interference, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
   
   Rather than appearing before a federal grand jury, former acting secretary Chad Wolf was interviewed under oath by Justice Department lawyers and FBI officials, something one of the sources characterized as a “standard” first step for prosecutors.
   
   In December, Smith subpoenaed local officials in key presidential swing states for any and all communications involving Trump, his campaign and a series of aides and allies who assisted in his effort to overturn the 2020 election.

      Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head.  To indict one must have evidence to convict in a court of law. At least that's how I remember it.  But, the times are changin'...  This will be interesting to follow. Wonder if Pence will put p any objections to the subpoena?
