I think this article is worth a discussion and might help lower the level of animosity that so many HP forums rise to among participants.

"It takes a disruptive event, such as “the toppling of a regime or the loss of a war” to give people a new perspective and the opportunity to “recalibrate” their brain."

I would suggest it also takes verifiable facts. Most people won't change their convictions simply by someone else's opinion.

Kathleen::  Thank you for posting this article.  It's just what I've been waiting for to post my article.

Neuroscientist warns that Trumpism/MAGA is a cult because of cognitive dissonance.  Psychologist Leon Festinger described the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance in which there is a disconnect between one’s feelings, beliefs, and convictions and their observable actions.

This dissonance is distressing and, in order to relieve the anxiety, people may become more invested in the cult or belief system that goes against who they are individually. As such, cult members become more “dug-in” and will cling to thoughts and beliefs that contradict available evidence. In other words, they are no longer able to find a middle ground or compromise.

One?  That's all you could come up with?  One "expert" willing to say that any MAGA member is mentally ill?

Surely you can do better than that!  lol

Wilderness:  Obviously, you didn't read the link.  You are becoming very good at replying without reading the entire post.

Of course I did not read the link.  Any psychologist that claims fifty million people need mental therapy in this country is not someone I would gain any information from.

The bigger question is why you would read such a thing.  It is obviously biased, so why read it?  Did the title mislead you?

Yes, there are "takers". I took Scott's RWA test some time ago and thankfully enough, I have no characteristics associated with the lemming like high RWA scorers.

Fear, Authoritarian Submission, Hostility, Prejudice, and Lack of Critical Thinking.

The link goes to an article titled; Why America is going backward: Being the richest nation in history isn't enough. I don't think that was what you wanted.

I found this article by Salon discussing RWA. The title is; Right-wing authoritarianism is winning — but higher education is where we can fight back.

Is that the article you meant?

My comment after reading it is two words . . . shocking and sad!!

Sorry, the information is toward the end of the article that I linked.

Is the need to be dominated, controlled by anyone so desirable? We, as Americans would never think that we could be under the lure of a tyrant, thinking that that is reserved for others.

Thanks! I read the part about RWA. I will read the whole article later. All I can say is it is definitely revealing according to Altemeyer regarding the polling for the U.S. vs other countries. Gives one reason to ponder and look deeper.
