"We're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country". On Day 1, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history.”. Donald Trump.
The US has previously implemented mass deportation programs targeting Mexicans in the 1950s and during the Great Depression. But never has a deportation initiative targeted so many people, especially those who have lived in the US for years — or even decades — and have family here, than what Trump is proposing. For that reason, Trump’s plans may be even more disruptive than previous mass deportation programs, terrorizing families who have been here for years and tearing apart communities where undocumented immigrants have planted roots and have contributed greatly.
Nearly 80% of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. have been in the country a decade or more, and millions of them work and have families here. A concerted effort to round up, detain and deport people by the millions would not only raise legal and human rights concerns, it would cost billions of dollars a year.
But Trump told NBC News after winning the election that there is "no price tag." But where would the funds come from to round up all of these folks and sweep them out of the country?
Laborers across a variety of industries will be forced to leave.
Farmers are raising concerns about a loss of migrant workers, who are vital for their businesses from Florida to Wisconsin, while the National Foundation for American Policy warns that the country's economy would suffer as fewer American-born citizens enter the job market.
"If you look over the past five years, without immigrants and their children, there would have been no labor force growth in the United States," Stuart Anderson, NFAP executive director, told Newsweek.
"And that means that without labor force growth, it's very difficult for a country to have economic growth, and without economic growth, living standards in a country stagnate and potentially even decline"
How will a Trump administration "root out" those to be deported? Racial profiling? "Show me your papers"? workplace raids, massive detention camps, followed by around-the-clock deportation flights? What will it look like, how many citizens will be caught up in the process?
How realistic is this mass deportation campaign promise? What would be the human and financial cost?
