Ironic that Trump is behind firing scores of federal workers without cause, yet want those remaining to “get religion”.

I am still POED about the staffing shortages in key agencies like the IRS and Social Security, where adequate personnel and communication are the most crucial. Now, You cannot hope to reach a human being by telephone.  Yet, everybody tells me that this Trump is a “man of the people”, rubbish!

Cred,   I support Trump overall, but I don’t agree with him firing Erika McEntarfer today.

She was a Senate-confirmed economist with bipartisan backing, and there hasn’t been any clear evidence presented that she manipulated data or did anything improper. While the July jobs report was weak and past months were revised downward, that kind of adjustment is a normal part of how economic data is reported; it’s not usually a sign of wrongdoing. Firing her over it sends a troubling message and could risk politicizing the agency responsible for giving us neutral, accurate data about the economy. I understand Trump wants accountability, but in this case, it feels more like scapegoating. If he believes the data was skewed, he should provide proof, not just accusations. A move like this might create distrust in government statistics going forward, and that could have long-term consequences for public confidence.

As for the staffing shortages, I completely get your frustration. It is a serious issue. No one wants to deal with endless phone menus or wait months for a response about taxes or Social Security. That being said, the current cuts aren’t just about Trump being reckless; they reflect a shift in how this new administration wants to run the federal government, aiming for what they call "efficiency." You and I might not agree with how it's playing out, especially if it means losing real human support in agencies that people rely on. I still believe Trump has the country’s best interests at heart, but I’m also not afraid to speak up when I think something’s being mishandled. This was one of those cases.

Ironically, Trump's staffing cuts are making the BLS data a little less accurate because they had to cut out some of their surveys in 4 or 5 cities. It isn't serious yet, but could get that way.

I appreciate your thoughtful take, and honestly, I agree with a good portion of what you said. I do support Trump and continue to believe in the core direction of his policies, particularly when it comes to restoring economic strength, promoting national security, and pushing back on bloated government. That said, I didn’t agree with how he handled Erika McEntarfer’s firing. She was Senate-confirmed, had bipartisan backing, and from what I’ve seen, no clear evidence of wrongdoing was publicly presented. If there were concerns about data integrity, they should have been backed up with specifics. Without that, the move feels abrupt and does risk creating the impression that neutral institutions are being politicized.

That said, I also understand where Trump’s instincts might be coming from. For years, many Americans have felt that official data sometimes doesn’t reflect lived reality, especially when inflation, job quality, or underemployment are involved. So I get the push for accountability. But that push needs to be done the right way, or it undermines confidence rather than restoring it.

Bottom line: I still support Trump’s agenda and the change in direction he represents. But supporting someone doesn’t mean blindly agreeing with every decision. In this case, I think he ,I hope he explains more about the reasoning, because otherwise it risks looking like a political move, not a principled one.

If you don't mind, let's dig a little deeper into the things you think is wrong. Can we start with "bloated gov't"?

What makes you think it is bloated relative to the mission the people have given it through its representatives. And how long has it been this way?

In full disclosure, I was part of that "bloat" from 1981 - 2008 as a civil servant and from 1971 - 1995 in the military (mainly national guard)

        Sharlee, thanks for your input.

I was just trying to demonstrate the kind of man that Trump is. Does the “shoot the messenger” kind of attitude make you uncomfortable about how he manages other things or even his agenda, based on truthfulness? It was bad enough that he took the action against the head of BLS. But to top that, he was not the least bit    ashamed of letting the entire country know how he reasons things out.

The government cannot operate solely on Trumps ego and caprice. That is in the realm of the private sector and has no place  in government where power has to be shared to make the system work.

Rather than mishandled, it reveals a grievous character flaw in Mr. Trump. A character flaw with serious implications in a man having so much power. It just provides an alternate dimension as to why I simply do not trust the man.

I could never understand how the administration could be so short sighted  as to allow Musk and his meat axe to indiscriminately cut so many vital programs and services. I don’t call that efficient.

Does Trump really want accurate data regarding the economy, or will he willingly accept the lie to save face. How much more quickly do you believe that he could lie to you?

I believe that Trump is capable of operating only in his own best interests
