FOOLISH LIBS TAKE THE BAIT by Geoffrey Ingersoll, Editor at Large (Aug 12, 2025)
Just hours after an ABC News anchor said on air that she had been “jumped” two blocks from their offices and that a coworker’s car had been stolen that morning, ABC’s nightly news anchor, David Muir, kicked to a segment about “crime stats” and “what they actually show.”
In case you missed it yesterday, Donald Trump announced “Liberation Day II.” Instead of trade, the highly anticipated sequel would take on crime in the nation’s capital. Trump federalized DC’s Metro Police and deployed 800 National Guard.
The response from libs was both overwhelming and overwhelmingly dumb. It was also note-for-note identical to previous reactions they’ve had to Trump saying obviously true things.
A few examples:
- Trump says we shouldn’t castrate gender-confused kids, libs say the practice is “evidence based,” lists off cooked studies.
- Trump says COVID came from a lab, libs say actually it came from Chinese people eating red-striped raccoon dogs and here’s more cooked “studies” to prove it.
- Trump says illegal immigration is a crisis, libs say what illegal immigration, what crisis? Also illegal immigration is good, see these pro immigration “studies”.
- Trump says inflation is going to crush the middle class, libs say inflation is “transitory” and actually probably good, more totally gamed “studies”.
When it comes to crime in DC, the tune is playing out almost identically. X was awash in DC locals recounting their personal experiences with crime. In the same breath, the liberal bourgeoisie – think tankers, talking heads, journalists – insisted “crime stats” showed violent crime falling to a “30-year low.”
We’re at a 30-year low! They shout as the historic Union Station right next to Congress is visibly overtaken by vagrants, drug addicts and criminals.
At this point, I’ll say something else that’s obvious: When people who insist on not prosecuting crimes tell you crime has fallen, don’t believe them.
And there’s plenty of reason not to believe the stats. The local Fraternal Order of Police accused a DC police commander of cooking them just a few months ago.
In a rare moment of clarity, one of CNN’s own pollsters said liberals should drop the “crime stats” act.
“What’s striking is that … national Democrats have been insisting, ‘just look at the statistics. We have 30-year, 30-year low, you know, violent crime’ … I’ve talked to Democrat strategists today that think that, you know, national Democrats saying, ‘look at the statistics,’ is sort of a tone deaf way to react,” said Axios’s Alex Thompson on CNN.
“And it’s very much — isn’t this the exact same problem that Democrats had last year?” exclaimed Echelon Insights pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson. “‘Look at the statistics! We promise you the economy is great’ while people are going, ‘it doesn’t feel great to me.’ That feels like a lot of this conversation around crime that you can point to statistics all day long that say, ‘hey, D.C. is safer this year than it was last year,’ but do people feel safe? Bottom line, if they don’t, they may be more okay with something that would otherwise be considered extraordinary.”
Will they listen? Probably not. They staged a gathering last night to “bang pots and pans” to protest Trump’s “authoritarian” crime measures.
A few blocks from where they were protesting, someone was shot and killed.
What universe are these people occupying right now? Because it isn’t the one most normal people call home.
Mike Solana of Pirate Wires summed the dissonance up perfectly, in my opinion.
“This puts ‘Liberation Day’ squarely in the sort of legal gray area Trump excels at exploiting, and pressures Democrats to take the other side of yet another generally popular idea far outside the coastal lib Overton Window — in this case, stopping crime,” Solana wrote.
I don’t need to cite any studies or statistics. I also don’t need a crystal ball to tell you what the outcome of this will be if Democrats continue being the anti-crime fighting party.
The midterms are right around the corner. Who do you think will win, the folks doing something about crime, or the folks saying crime doesn’t exist?
Thoughts, accolades, criticisms, and/or commentary?
Didn't the NY Governor deploy the National Guard to the Subways of NY City?
When stores are being looted and people being assaulted is that supposed to be allowed?
Well even in a uber-Leftist State like NY they try and keep some Law and Order.
Not much, obviously, but enough to keep it from appearing totally Apocalyptic.
"Didn't the NY Governor deploy the National Guard to the Subways of NY City?"
The key word is governor...
Have you been to any rural areas of the Mississippi Delta or Louisiana??
My God... Third World stuff...
Maybe these poor folk are more worthy of a government takeover?
THIS IS AMERICA...
Thanks for chiming in, Ken. Yup, you're right back in Mar 2024 NY city did call in the guard.
And DC is not a State... so its within his jurisdiction to do so.
Historically, it was never intended for there to be a mayor and city council.
It was put in by the Congress in the 70's. With the contingency that if they deem it so the President or Congress could take the District (not state) back over when required to restore order.
The problem resides... as we have discussed elsewhere... people have differing ideas of what Law and Order is, what Reality is...
Some people think it is the right of ______ [fill in the blank] to loot stores and assault people, because of their place on the totem pole of victimhood and being oppressed... while other people think if you rob a store or assault someone you should be shot, dead, on the spot.
Some people believe all police should be defunded and lawlessness should rule (a growing theme on the Left) while others believe people should be punished for their crimes and Police should enforce the law.
I suspect there is far less of the nonsense seen in places like DC or NY here in Florida, because here in Florida it is known that the State and most local Authorities support you shooting/killing someone who assaults you in your home or business... and that goes a long way to deterring most criminals, not knowing who is just itching to put a bullet between their eyes.
"Democrats continue being the anti-crime fighting party."
Talk about a sweeping generalization. tsmog! I would have expected more from you.
But if folks fall for this latest distraction from all the outrageous actions of this administration and our feckless congress' willingness to look the other way, then those very enablers will get re-elected. Which, as always, is what this is all about.

Family separation is a big new political talking point , Some family separations are permanent however . Now Molly Tibbetts was separated permanently from her family , I wonder when this new phenomena of "selective outrage" will actually be for a good cause?

Explain how Trump's Wall will be different from the Berlin Wall or the Wall in Israel. How will it "keep us safe"?

I thought, obviously in error, that when foreigners crossed the border, attacked and killed Americans, in America, the Federal Government would take the appropriate actions to prevent recurrences. Recent events shows that killing American citizens by armed thugs from south of the border will...
