People service is a very important question, because it relates most to our main purpose in life, which is to serve others. Without purpose we can not master life and it would lower our lifespan greater than any other way.
I must be one of those foolish hungry optimist, and look at the world in two parts Upsides and Downsides comparing it to the good times of the 1950s. You can use pro and con as you wish.
Up side of people service
1.More opportunity and choices of social groups and jobs than any other time in human history
2.Travel the world easier to visit other cultures and having other cultures living in our neighborhood
3.Easier access to more affordable products and less wars per ca-pita
4.Increased our life span 15 to 20 year greater since 1950
5 Internet updates for most growth of small businesses worldwide, Most of the third world population has double or triple their economical growth compared to North American growth . Sometime I wonder....Who Are All These People?
6. We kept increasing our square footage our homes for the last 50 years
Downside of People service
1. Materialist, greed of the 1% wealthy controlling most of everything, low increase in wages, higher cost basic need cost
2.Over population and pollution crime increases much like over crowded rats do.
3.For the first time in human modern history our children will be living lower life expectancy than us parents today.
My total has been More Pro than Con in our in the World today, we can always improve. May I suggest that be enlighten wail they are working on it.
Are you More Pro or Con or more Upside or Downside about our World today compared to the 1950s?
The country is not overpopulated but it needs to be redistributed.
The country has not kept up with resources needed for the increase in population.
37 million people live in California, and 10 million of them live in S Cal. The state is large and there are open spaces all over the state.
But in general I am in the Con mode
From living in LA when I was young, I can see how California has been turned onto it's head the last decade, more so than most places.
When do you think it will improve?
Hands down culture is better today than the fifties. The question is will there be a return?
Per ca pita we have reduce our family membership down to 1/3 compared to the 50s, that would be my greatest concern still, can we reduce population fast enough for a better quality of life in our future?.
Do you get the feeling most people do not agree with us, and most likely will ignore this thread?
I'm not so sure culture is better now than it was in the fifties. Certainly there are more opportunities but there are also many more people looking for those opportunities, so it's kind of a wash. Life in the fifties was more responsible in general. Family life was closer. Everything was cheaper and even though salaries were also lower, production wasn't inflated and neither were prices for the most part. There weren't as many tax laws nor did we have the threat of cyber attacks and identity theft.
Each to his own generation so I guess in the end, it's all good.
Seems to me the corporate capitalist oligarchy is doing its darnedest to reduce not just human but all populations, with war, pollution, global warming and freedom to ever buy more and more which requires ever more customers, which is why we now have so called globalization.
Then the people do their darnest to take control and power back from the rich. It is the same story throughout human's history, the people are the true leaders and when too much abuse happens their collective consciousness changes it.
Thank God for Global public option, the other super power
I think the reason things were so good in the 50's and the 60's was because of the cold war with the soviet union. We had an enemy that we never fought. We had a huge aerospace and defense industry that employed millions of people either directly or indirectly to build a military machine that was in an arms race. These people became consumers and caused the economic engine to thrive. If one asks the question are we better off today than in the 50's? I would say no, although the one percent of our population is. But that's another story.
"We had an enemy that we never fought."
+1
There was a 1% in the 50s, and life expectancy was shorter than today. So I am not really seeing all these huge cons to outweigh giving women and non-white people (i.e. the majority of people) full human rights.
Good point Nouveau
We are living longer, women rights improve and race in the 50s was not so sweet.
It's been very honky dory for the American white man in the 50s with no debt and a saving account yet their Families live in 1/3 the square footage plus three times the Family members. Personally I like the tiny or small homes back in the 50s and reinventing them green house myself for the people of today, in order for them not to spend money, they do not have.
Race was a big issue, it was illegal for interracial marriage until 1960s and for Gays until 1973, Today gays can move to some place and get married. Whites are only 20% of the world population. And it won't be long that White supremacy will mix with all race and most of us will be brown , add more color to life, don't you think?
Sorry. The part about most of us will be brown. I thought we already were. As though 'white' is not a color that is acceptable to be.
Why I'm white and my family is more brown.
Culture has much more to do with changing people, than skin color
Yes, I agree with that. Why call anyone white or black?
Well, some day we won't need to id someone by their skin color
I'll say, that person in the red shirt
From a political standpoint, I believe this country is much more divided and polarized than it was in the 50's. We can't seem to compromise on anything. It makes great politics, but it's terrible for the economy and our democracy.
It's because most of the world population which is the third world population has doubling and has tripled your Economy growth,
Over all for the world economy and our democracy.is better, the American dream myth is over, it better to downside like the 50s, move 20 years ahead by going 60 year behind
Perhaps because we have pro con men in Congress, things seem a bit negative.
One black man in the white house is a start, maybe we can reduce the amount of lawyers who are con Congress men next.
And tell me, what is the black man's immunity to hate? They also can't lie either, I suppose. And all blacks are liberal. Are you basing your statement on a stereotype? Sure sounds like it.
I'm not impressed with Obama, just the fact a difference race of any color made it in. Many black people could not imagine a black person as President in their life time.
A kid asked GW Bush -- Who lives in the white house?
Bush answered - White people
I do not think anything was good then and its not any better today. They always claim that the kids are getting worst and its their fault but I think we are several generations into bad choices and problems that were made then and never solved then and we just keep adding to them.
Kids do have it to tougher in many ways, with so many step parents, in-laws and a few other relative that do not connected well. Then for the first time in modern human history their generation will live a shorter life span than ours.
Yet when I look at my daughter she is more educated and street smarter than me at the same young age. Right now she is a better artist than me at age 21, I've been an artist for 37 years. The only area I've done greater than her is at sports and traveling, no, no these kids today are generally doing better than us.

Outside of war as an option for some, what two options would you offer to stop population growth. And what do you think the initial effects would be on our everyday lives? For instance do we reduce on prolonging life and letting nature take its course? Do we ban the global population for having...

What does religion do to us?You can't think about the past and ignore religion, it was such a fundamental, mind shaping, driving force for pre-modern societies. I am very interested in what religion does to us, today...its capacity to create love and empathy or hatred and violence. Is religion...

Why do so many Americans hate America? And if they hate it so much why don't they just leave? One thing that really bothers me is the way some Americans seem to hate everything about America. I'd just like to ask them: "If you hate everything about the country you live in then why are you...
