    A man I've never met?  How close?
    If he's close enough to breath down my neck, I feel creeped out, hyper-alert,  I watch for his shadow, to get a feel for his size.  I listen to his gate.  I think "Dude, back off before I break your skull"

    A few feet behind me? 
    Aware.  Relaxed.  Calm.

    if it is a stranger....I would literally tell him to beat it!  Just too close for comfort.  I remember a man did that to me in a hotel and it wasn't a pretty scene

    If it is in the day-time I don't really notice. When a man is walking close behind me at night, even if it isn't closer than is socially acceptable, I feel very vulnerable and look for other people nearby or places I could run.
