In the US, most jurisdictions allow you and your spouse to get a divorce without an attorney (not recommended). You can do your own paperwork, etc. but you'll still have to pay filing fees.

I've seen this book, and it is good. It's written to help a person better supervise his/her own case when an attorney is involved, but you will benefit from it. If I were you, I'd invest a few bucks in the book before doing anything else. After you see what you're dealing with, you'll be better informed and better able to decide what path you need to take.
