Don't you have a feeling that we fake way too much? Faking smiles?

I have come across the information that when "overcompensate" by displaying exaggerated emotions, we begin resent people who "made" us do so. "Smile, smile, smile!"  "Leave me alone, I will smile, when I feel like it, but my smile will be worth something, not like those plastered grins you wear because you have been told to "smile, smile, smile!"

I agree that people with fake smiles can easily be recognized since it does not come from the heart. But, I still have some hope for that kind of person since even a fake smile could create a positive stir in her to eventually make it a genuine smile smile

The same holds for us...IF we don't feel like smiling...we should since, the stretch of those muscles will make our heart change and make that smile a genuine one smile

Yes, I think we are encouraged to pretend to be happy, especially if you work in customer service.  You are never allowed to have a bad day in customer service.  It is really frustrating.

I also don't know why we bother asking people how they are doing.  Nine times out of ten, they are going to give you a fake answer unless they are a close friend.  Why not just greet people with "Good Morning" or "Hello" instead?

I think most smiles are fake nowadays and that's why we notice the beauty in the real ones more and more.

Perhaps it's the "fake it 'til you make it" theory where we push ourselves to smile and then eventually smile naturally and genuinely due to habit.  I guess the point is to convince yourself that you are happy, therefore you start believing it & become happy; and only then show true smiles!

Some people do it out of politeness, i.e. when someone has just said a joke that really isn't funny so you smile just to make them feel better.
Then again, some people also just seem like they put on a fake smile just to spite or mock others.

Either way, it doesn't really matter because nothing beats heartfelt genuine smiles and laughter, which also happen to be contagious. wink

I believe people don't smile enough anymore. Sometimes I feel like I am walking in a city of zombies.

When I worked at a cafe I definitely had the fake smile thing going on, because no one likes to buy coffee from a grumpy person!

You will notice some differences in real smile and fake smile on their faces.

A real and happy smile will have the glow on their faces. A fake smile can be easily detect with the face expression.

I have to meet people everyday and I find myself smiling to people is the best thing in life. Why? It makes a beautiful day! I always believe in having a nice day and every morning when I wake up, I can see the smiles on my wife & kids.

So, a real smile on their faces make it a happy day. A smile from the heart makes you feel better as you look forward to venture the day!

Oh i fake smiles and lie all the time. hmm It's one of the many rules of how to manipulate the competition to get across your ideas and purpose. For example look on gaddafi's life.Remember how the UK,France and the U.S. were hugging and smiling with him a few years ago. What's taking place in Libya now? It's dog eat dog in this world, but i have already evolved into a wolf.

It is common in US to wear a smile even if you don't feel like it. I often see two women who hate each other put on a fake smile and "pretend' hug each other. It is not exactly the same in some other places on this planet. There are other countries where people are more honest and don't smile if they don't want to. They don't always answer "How are you" with a fake "I am fine' when they aren't fine.

I'm not sure if people fake smiles as much as they make a decision to smile as a way of positively communicating with others.

The distinction I'm making here is the difference between a spontaneous, automatic smile and a smile that a person forms on purpose to make someone else feel comfortable or to help a group run more smoothly. Smiling can be good etiquette.

For example, many people smile for a picture rather than because their smile reflex is triggered spontaniously.
