Does anyone know why some men only respond to the 'Damsel in Distress'?
I'd venture because it's instinctive of men to protect women. But I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "only respond to". Maybe you could clarify?
Let me clarify a bit....when a very independent woman has a unforeseen crisis...some men will jump to 'save the day' but after they respond during their moment of need...and then discover that this woman is independent and can take care of herself...
This question would be easier to answer if you did clarify it a little but for what you did ask here is what I think.
Some men respond to the damsel in distress because they do believe women need protecting just like Logos831 said. The ones who don't respond are probably the ones who either think women can handle themselves or the ones who don't care what happens either way. Some people are just like that.
They might not think they are worthwhile company and have to be doing something for someone in order to be worthwhile, or they might be looking for someone who appears weak so they can take control. Sorry I might be a little bit cynical here. I have seen it a lot, though.
I will try to answer without stepping on your toes and have actually started an article about this.
Many women today are too independent for anyone else in their lives. They are seen as people who take charge and aren't "approachable".
As someone else has mentioned it is in a man's nature to take care of a woman. When she appears to be in need they come forward to help. If afterward she puts up her self containing wall they recede. (She may not even be aware she does this but body language and facial expressions tells all.)
Being able to take care of one's self is a good thing but many women take it too far and to the point men do not look at her as a person needing another individual in their lives for any reason.
