Online Dating: Safety Tips for Women

Updated on March 10, 2010

Safety When Online Dating

Online dating has become a very popular way to meet men these days. However there are risks to meeting people online that you have to be aware of. If you follow a few simple safety rules you will find that online dating can be an enjoyable and safe experience.

The most important safety rule for online dating is to never give out any personal information. Not your address or your phone number or anything else that can be used to track you down. One common slip up is to tell the man where you work, don't do this. You can tell him what you do for a living but don't tell them which company you work for. You have to make sure that you know the man well before giving out any kind of information that could be used to find out where you live or work. You also want to make sure that you don't tell him what your plans for the day are, you don't want to give out anything that he could use to track you down.

The online dating site that you belong to will have an email service and probably a chat service that you can use to communicate with the people you meet online, use these. Don't give out your email address because if they really want to they can find out your personal information from your email address. If you have to give them an email address use something like Yahoo or Hotmail, don't ever give out the email address that came from your internet service provider.

If you do finally decide to meet a man in person make sure that you do it in a very public place. It is also a good idea to bring a friend along with you. Make it a short meeting and make sure that you leave separately. Don't let him talk you into going somewhere else with him at the first meeting.

Online dating can be a lot of fun if you are smart about it. Safety is a legitimate concern and it is something that you need to be aware of. If you use some common sense and follow a few simple safety rules you should have no problem. When you meet a man in person your guard is always up until you get to know him, when dating online it is easy to drop your guard because a man talking to you through email doesn't seem threatening. You need to make sure that you treat online dating with the same caution that you would dating in the real world.
