Religion; A Failed Social Experiment

Updated on February 7, 2012

They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love

Christianity a Failed Social Experiment in America

I was having one of my typical dinner parties with the Ivy League. Perhaps this dinner party was not so typical as it is my friend who lived in France for 15 years and we don't really even debate but discuss things that interest us.

Last night we both concluded that only the blackest sheep's veil themselves in Christianity as a morally superior point. Most people can find good to do in their communities through volunteer work without having to serve in church leadership and obtain acknowledgement for their absolute good.

We also concluded that George Bush may very well have turned all of America off to Christianity and in particular the evangelical moment by his inability to turnt he other cheek after 9/11. It was a moment that was a litmus test for the Bush administration. Were they truly conservative Christians or were they after a vendetta? The Bush administration failed to show they were true Christians but more of an administration that cloaked itself in the claim of faith without actually being the faithful.

Sadly, this will hurt Mitt Romney and leave a permanent stain on the Republican Party as the Republican Party will cease to exist if they do not step away from the evangelical base as quickly as possible. And it also means the death of any hopeful run for JEB. I think the Bush era has finally ended in this country permanently. There is no more place for organized religion in politics. George Bush ended that as well.

We Will Walk With Our Brothers We Will Walk Hand in Hand

I remembered this song clearly from my childhood and yet the lines are different on youtube. One of the lines was "We Will Walk With Our Brothers We Will Walk Hand in Hand". How America has failed to do this. If anything after 9/11 we should have embraced the Muslim countries that were our allies and asked for their assistance with going after the terrorists. But instead paranoia (clinical) took over the executive branch and they alienated every single Muslin in America. And it is still going on today.

Barack Obama is not a Muslim. His name is Swahalia. He didn't choose it. I believe he has Americanized it to be more adaptable. But if he were a Muslim I would feel the same way about him. He is my brother. I am not to tear him down because he has an African name but build him up as he is my brother. I think it has been absolutely awful the way this man has been attacked on his faith which we should all respect and his birthplace. I have more sympathy for Barack Obama then I have had for any Democrat in years because of these very personal attacks on him. Substantively do I agree with everything he has done? Absolutely not!

But I am a Christian by deed and in order for me to maintain my values and faith I have to be Christian to Barack Obama and accept he is my brother in faith if nothing else.

It gravelly concerns me that this country has become so polarized by Christianity but fails to show Christian values. Attending church or being in a leadership in Church doesn't make you a Christian. It can only be measured by your treatment of others especially those outside of your religion.

After 9/11 I was around Muslims rather constantly and habitually but I always have been. And they felt so persecuted in this country. And I was offended for them. They are decent hardworking people just as another individual from a religious group. And quite frankly, Muslims will not let you go hungry. It is against the tenets of their faith. They are required to be brothers and sisters to all mankind as well. If only the executive branch had seen the infinite value in embracing our allies instead of declaring war when we were so painfully wounded on 9/11. And yes, I did carry on my usual life after 9/11 because I knew that both good and bad lurks in every religion, in every social economical status and we always had to be vigilant.

Has Christianity Failed In America?

That is up to you. Can you leave behind your old prejudices and what the Bush Administration has claimed about all Muslims in order to unite with our brothers and sisters? If you can't Christianity is dead. IF you can then it succeed despite George Bushes best attempts to destroy it. We need to unite with all faiths and not just Muslims. I would like to see the USA embrace Buddhism beyond that of give the Dali Lama a gift once and a while. Perhaps they could pressure China to bring back the Panche Lama who must be in his late teens if he is still even alive.

There are many paths to enlightenment and when 9/11 happened America became cut off from their roles as Christians in the world.

A Few Ideas How to Begin?

  • Accept that it is more important to act Christian then to lead Christians.
  • Embrace individuals of other faiths.
  • Serve in countries that desperately need aid relief which America is fastly falling into that category.
  • Accept that the USA must have a seperation of Church and State now more then ever and that we have lost moral authroity based on the evangelicals.
  • Try to learn about other religions and be respectful of others' religious beliefs.
  • Attend a Mosque or Temple as a means of studying and appreciating other faiths. Sadly, you will not be able to attend a Mormon Temple as non-Mormons aren't allowed.
  • Visit and elderly person and make certain they have food and clean clothes.
  • Volunteer in your community and be of service.
  • And start walking hand in hand with all your brothers and sisters again.

Our Conclusion

We truly believed last night at the conclusion of our conversation that if America did not change how it perceived the world and stopped being divided along religious and political lines that it would never regain its' strength as a nation. On 9/11 it was George Bush stopped trusting in God and believed wholeheartedly in Carpet Bombing. And while I will never argue the influence the NRA has had on politics we are a country which has "In God We Trust" on everything. When are we going to trust in God again? Or better yet when are we going to realize that all the propaganda about each other is just not true and we unite?

America's best defense is unity and for the moments after 9/11 we had the opportunity to unify with the rest of the world instead of carpet bomb it. Why didn't our government do that? Carpet bombing is the least effective and most politically disastrous thing the USA could be engages in at this or any other time. Carpet Bombing has been out dated since Vietnam but I guess all war is insanity and their is no room for insanity and Christianity in America and therefore until these wars end Christianity is a failed social experiment in America. And to exceptionally clear greed and allowing your neighbor to starve or people to go homeless is not Christian either.

Christianity is dead until people around the country decide tor resurrect it. And this article is not really about the HP community because I believe all of you are aware of this but with the exception of a few. It is more geared towards those outside of HP which I receive traffic from now.

      Hi Cred2,

So am I conservative or a liberal? I do get so confused with all these labels flying about. Most of all I hope you call me friend and sister. Again I am going to stick with the line that I believe both parties to be guilty of stating one thing and doing another. I think we should measure how we vote in the next election on who has the best plan and is capable of executing that plan and not on social issues.

Social issues for both parties are fluff talk. Niether party takes them very seriously.

I want a woman politician in the Executive Branch and not any of the ones who have been serving in Congress. DC needs some fresh blood.

I have been out of it for a while with my son being sick and in the hospital and working on my field research. I am also developing products to sell.

I have been asked to wrtie a hub about Barack and I think everyone would be surprised by what I would write. Soem would think it too kind and others would think it too harsh. I seem to find myself in between everyone. I catch hell from the Dems and the Conservative Reps. It is like they are trying to kill off the Old Guard Republicans. I am here to stay.

We missed an opportunity on 9/11 to embrace our enemies and attack them from within. We had them as allies. No one else will have the courage to admit this but I am going to say it. Iraq was a hughe mistake like Camobodia before Vietnam which has brought the Killing Fields to America. There is a new level of violence Americans have to endure because of lack of intelligence going into Iraq and the continued laack of progress. We have made our worst enemies by using very hard tactics and embolding our foes. And this will spread like a plague across the world. If there hadn't been the knee jerk carpet bombing perhaps there could have been a quicker resolution. But who am I kidding, we are a nation of military industrialization and we make money off of wars; well atleast Hollywood and the wealthy do.

Thanks for reading and have a good one my friend. I am holding off one writing any political articles about Barack/President Obama for the time being. In time things will be more clear.

Mahatmas Gandhi once said that if everybody lived up to the tenets of Christianity as laid out in the scriptures and exemplified by Jesus, this world would be totally different. The problem with too many is that they fail to recognize that we do not want to be indoctrinated, but instead as found in scripture, "let your own good example move others to action'.

Conservatives wear the label and give the slogans but lack what it is that true followers (and they are rare) understand. It is not a' la carte, taking the morsels you want from the smorgasboard and leaving what you don't want. I would rather deal with the devil himself than to suffer listening to hypocrites. Great hub, Cred2

      HI Dreaver,

Regardless of your religion which I will respect you are my brother. And that will be the only way I see the world. I am old gurad Republican and that is the position of old guard Republican always. I really don't even believe in the parties any longer. But that we should all transcend bigotry and hatred and embrace loving each other.

Good to meet you and thank you for reading and commenting.

      Great article JT!

I am not of your religion and I am not of the Muslim religion either. However it is saddening the way the Ignorance and Prejudice still remain so prevalent in Mankind through Religion and Evangelists such as the Bush Administration. The saddest part is how easily the general populace is swayed by these people.

The prime example is 9/11. Although a horrific occurrence, what is more horrific is the amount the media abused this very occurrence to drive fear and hate-mongering within you. Bush being the worst example of this.

Barack Obama can't do too much when the Republicans are just sitting there saying no to him, because to the evangelist Republicans, it's about them staying in control of everything and not the better of the people as a whole.

And all you will ever see from them, is the same Evangelist hate and fear mongering so that they can retain their control.

But a new Era is coming. As a whole, I hope to see Mankind transcend into something greater than what we have seen the past 12 years. I hope mankind will achieve a global Peace, love and understanding.

      Great Article!

I respect your opinion and you are my friend. I wish all of the peace to be with you. I know of several churches but I find some of the best people outside of church. I wish we lived closer so we could be buddies to each other.

I am wondering if you could get involved in FIT for vocational tech programs. Spirituality comes from within and is measured in loving deeds and not in church attendance or even leadership and I write this as a Catholic. I love the Pope but not one who isn't walking the walk before talking the talk.

It would be nice if this country could unite finally.

Have a great one my friend.

Since you were so gracious, I came back and read it. Sorry for the knee jerk reaction. I see you have already forgiven me.

To answer all of your questions. You have an excellent point. I have been in the trenches. I had a hard time getting prayer from my church, never mind physical support. I was involved with community development at the time. Interest was low for what was going on outside of the doors for all but a few. As a matter of fact, if my car broke down in the rain, I would call my friend JB, not someone from church. That backslider will show up and not screen the call. In my experience, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists make the best neighbors. So, you are preaching to the choir.

My church , a semi-mega, split a few years ago over political nonsense and dwindled to almost nothing. I have not found one where I feel at home, since, and rarely attend any services. I have come to the conclusion that it is a sign of the times and I can't worry what others do. It would be nice to have a vocational program going, though. Maybe the United Way?

So glad to hear you still love me, I thought I might have lost you there for a moment.

Let me qualify, I think we should have tactically used 9/11 to our advantage instead of completely declaring war on the Middle East. The appearance of enduring and taking it quitely would have been a much more advantageous position then declare war on Islam.

What WD? Your church does believe we are all brothers and sisters regardless of our differences in faith, race, sexual morientation and ethnicity?

You don't think a Christian is better judged by his deeds then by his words or Chruch attendance?

And you don't think that George Bush has completely killed the evangelical base of his own party and the moral authority of this country with his religious dogma?

Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and that is indisputeable. Our country attacked another country out of revenge and hit the wrong country. You don't think that will come back to bite us.

I am glad you still love me because I am going to push back even further and tell you I would have endured the attack and made certain I had the right target before I carpet bomb innocent people. It is great for the military industrialization of this country but it makes for really horrific international relations.

How Christian is it to carpet bomb the wrong people?

I hope you still love me even though we differ on this point.

Turn the other cheek after 9/11? That's when I quit reading.

There is a huge difference in personal response to personal aggression and defense of a nation. Now, the fool didn't handle the job well. We could have been much more effective against the enemy that has declared war on our nation by using better tactics and attacking training bases world wide. Why should we care about the opinion of cowards in other countries?

As a Christian who has a direct line to headquarters, I am sick of people misrepresenting my faith. Inside the Church and without.

Don't get me wrong, I still love you.
