    Did Jesus Descend Into Hell?

Are there any Bible verses that say that Jesus ever descended to hell? If not where does this notion come from?

As far as I can tell, the word "Sheol" is used in scripture when Jesus was said to depart into hell. My understanding is that Sheol describes a "place of the dead," It is also thought of as a temporary place where one awaits judgement---whereas hell or the lake of fire is said to be permanent.

"Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire." Revelation 20: 12-14
It appears there are two parts of Sheol---one in which one awaits judgement and the other in which one has been judged and found wanting. The Jews believed in "purgatory" although they call it by a different name. Since Jesus was a Jew as well as the majority of his followers, this in-between place may not have seemed improbable.

The notion that Jesus went to hell comes from the Apostles Creed, ("he descended into hell....") as well as several verses in the Bible. Long story short, Jesus died, then he came back to earth. It would not be outrageous to suggest he spent some time in sheol---but why he would have done so is anybody's guess.

An interesting question. I'll plan on looking into this and noting what Bible scholars have to say about this matter.

Because your bible is a translation of the 1600's King James bias to his thoughts and translations of his own religion. The one I read from
Speaks our language and translated from Hebrew and Greek. Not KJ
That is where many our lead and confuse

Norine unless you are willing to learn more about translations even before King James then you can not make the statement about taking away , because King James had taken away God's personal name Jehovah, clearly seen in Greek and Hebrew, And others

According to scriptures in Hebrew and Greek
When lower cased, referring to an individual grave; when capitalized, the common grave of mankind, equivalent to the Hebrew “Sheol” and the Greek “Hades.” It is described in the Bible as a symbolic place or condition wherein all activity and consciousness has ended.

    American Standard Version
Re 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

The answer to your question is yes under the terms in Hebrew and Greek.

1Pe 1:3 Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for according to his great mercy he gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
sheol and Hades were replace by KJ of the 1600's with Hell, his opinion has drastically
effected many in learning the truth.

Yes, According to I Peter 3:18-21 (v18) "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, (v19) By whom also he went and preached unto the spirits "in prison, (v20) Who at one time were disobedient, when once the long suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing, in which few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water (v21) The like figure unto which even BAPTISM doth also "now" save us (not in the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,"

So ye see, Jesus DID "...also descend into the lower parts of the earth.." according to Ephesians 4:9-10 and I Peter 3:18-21!
