Why is sacrificing things so big in most religions

It shows a willingness to give up something important. Most sacrifices also require a lot of preparation, and were developed when time was also a precious commodity. Gods rarely take the skin and bones or the crones, they want the meat and fat and virgins.
Very true, but in this day and age, where do you find a virgin?
