What did Joseph Smith do that would prove he is a true prophet of God?
I was raised a Mormon but never studied the religion or any others for that matter. I have come to a realization that the religion I have grown up in has many flaws. My mother told me that in order to believe in the Mormon faith you have to believe that Joseph Smith was a true modern-day prophet. But from the little I know about the bible and prophets I think they all did or said something that would prove undoubtedly that they were a prophet of God. Maybe I am wrong but I was wondering if there is something about Joseph Smith that I am missing.
Absolutely nothing that I'm aware of! I don't believe in him or that he was a prophet. Prophets were used by God to communicate with Israel (Old Testament). With the coming of Jesus, the Messiah, their was no longer a need to communicate through prophets. Jesus, the Son of God, came and gave His life as a sacrifice for the sins of the whole world...for my sins...for your sins. If you repent of your sin and believe in HIm, you shall be saved! If you care to, check out the hubs listed under my profile. Read "Salvation...Jesus is the Only Way". It's not about religion. It's about Jesus!
Jesus bestowed the priesthood on the apostles, giving the divine declaration; "Whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatsoever thou shall loose on Earth shall be loosed in Heaven."
And with that priesthood held by those men throughout the eternities, he sent those same Apostles, Peter, James, and John, to restore the priesthood keys to mankind through the Prophet Joseph by divine inspiration and by the laying on of their hands.
The Priesthood is not obtained through status or worldly accomplishment, it is not prepetuated through a theological degree, it is the power of God deligated to man. It is different from any other power on the face of the Earth, without it there could be a church in name only, and it has to be given to us from the hands of God himself. Above all the priesthood can not be used by principles of unrightousness, only by patience, meekness and longsuffering, and love unfeigned.
Through Joseph Smith, God brought the priesthood back, and ended the famine of hearing the word of the Lord.
Before I say anything, I must clarify that I am not here to judge you. That is God's duristiction. I am simply attempting to answer your question from my perspective. I do this in love and hope that the information I give you will help you as a believer in Christ Jesus.
I would ask, where in the Holy Bible does it say that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God? I can tell you with assurance, not even in the apocrypha (the omitted books of the bible) does it mention him or even prophesy about him. Only in the book of Mormon does it mention that he is a prophet. Let me say that again, only in Joseph Smith's own book does he claim to be a prophet. The Holy Bible says that Satan often times presents himself as an angel of light. And an angel of light is credited for speaking to Joseph Smith. I am NOT claiming that Joseph Smith was a Satan worshiper. I am simply saying that there is a probability that Joseph Smith was deceived. Also, in the Old Testament, specifically Deuteronomy 4:2, "You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you." Men in the Mormon Clergy are constantly adding, revising, and omitting from the book of Mormon. A book which they claim to be from the same God of the Holy Bible. Something which God, the same God that Mormon's credit for their book, has specifically forbidden us from doing. And God can not contradict Himself. May God's grace abide in you abundantly!
"But from the little I know about the bible and prophets I think they all did or said something that would prove undoubtedly that they were a prophet of God."
Joseph Smith made prophecies that came true.
Joseph Smith healed the sick in a miraculous manner.
Joseph Smith commanded the weather, and it obeyed.
And, out of nothing, Joseph Smith built a religious movement that is still thriving today.
What more do you want?
People saw Christ heal the sick and perform other miracles first-hand, and they still failed to believe in Him. Faith is not about what you do or don't see; it's all about being willing to pay the necessary price to know the truth.
I think the belief is that true prophets are supposed to always have their predictions come true. I don't know the accuracy of the previous statements, but if Joseph Smith was wrong in some of his predictions then he wouldn't be a true prophet.
The most significant evidence that Joseph Smith Jr. was and is a true prophet of God upon the earth in these last days is The Book of Mormon. It is the keystone of our religion -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I wrote and published a hub entitled: The Book of Mormon - The Most Correct Book of Any on Earth. I hope that you will take the time to read that article to better understand how The Book of Mormon proves that Joseph Smith Jr. is indeed a latter-day prophet and how you can come to know that for yourself.
Gordon B. Hinckley said: "The Book of Mormon is the only book ever published, of which I know, that carries in it a promise that one who reads it prayerfully and asks concerning it in prayer will have revealed to him by the power of the Holy Ghost a knowledge that it is true." (see Moroni 10:4).
That really is quite a remarkable statement and one that I have come to know for myself, is true.
Thank you for your comment. I will have to read your hub. Is it possible that it is the only book that has a promise of that because God doesnt need to make promises to people. The people asked God to show them and he did right? That wasnt enough?
Quote: (This I already have heard of before Wikipedia was even around. )
From wikipedia.org
"Moving the church in 1831 to Kirtland, Ohio, Smith attracted hundreds of converts, who came to be called Latter Day Saints. Some of these he sent to establish a holy city of "Zion" in Jackson County, Missouri. In 1833, Missouri settlers expelled the Saints from Zion, and a paramilitary expedition Smith led to recover the land was unsuccessful. Fleeing an arrest warrant in the aftermath of a Kirtland financial crisis, Smith joined the remaining Saints in Far West, Missouri. However, tensions escalated into a violent conflict in 1838 with the old Missouri settlers. Believing the Saints to be in insurrection, the governor ordered their expulsion from Missouri, and Smith was imprisoned on capital charges.
After escaping state custody in 1839, Smith led the Saints to build the city of Nauvoo, Illinois on Mississippi River swampland, where he became mayor and commanded a large militia. In early 1844, he announced his candidacy for President of the United States. That summer, after the Nauvoo Expositor criticized his power and new doctrines, such as plural marriage, Smith and the Nauvoo city council ordered the destruction of the newspaper as a nuisance. In a futile attempt to check public outrage, Smith first declared martial law, then surrendered to the governor of Illinois. He was killed by a mob while awaiting trial in Carthage, Illinois."
7) Before he was arrested in his final days, he burned all the minutes of his shadow government, the council of fifty.
8) He declared a martial law. (Very American and constitutional for a candidate of the US president to do I guess. If true)
Josephs Smith's mother was an occultist. Smith was, more than likely, not right in the head. Nowhere in the bible does it talk about Satan and Jesus being brothers, having a fight, and Jesus winning. No where in scripture does it mention that we can all be little gods of our own planet. Both of which are taught in the Morman church. Not only that, God is a God of consistencey, He never changes. Yet, Morman doctrine changes with the wind through their publications, which SUPERCEEDS even the book of Morman. And, as stated above, true prophets spoke the direct revelation of God-from God's mouth to theirs. We now have God's direct revelation to us in His bible, the need for prophets ended a very long time ago. God deals with us directly through His Divinely inspired word, not the book of Morman.
the fact that joseph smith was given a golden book by an angel proves that he is not a prophet of god. God watched his book being made. God wrote it and sealed it shut. Revelations pretty much ended the books completeness. Canonization stamped gods approval.
There are no angelic visitations especially to give books to people.
When god finishes a work, he never goes back on it.
Its a very strange question if you say that you were raised as Mormon. If you open the book of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, then it is already written in the first pages how he did.
His family testified. They were the witnesses.
What is more strange in his story is how he made the prophecy. So he found some ancient metal plates which really could be, because such things were used in earlier times.
But it was written in an forgotten language and Smith, empowered by God, was the only one who suddenly could read it.
Also his family proved that, nevertheless the plates then were burried and never found again.
I 'll share what made him a false prophet
Joseph Smith said on Feb. 1835 (History of the church 2:182) it was the will of God that those who went to Zion with a determination to lay down their lives (if necessary) should be ordained to the ministry. Also, to go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, for the coming of the Lord, which was nigh-even Fifty-six years should wined up the scene. (This is saying that Jesus should have come back to earth in Feb. of 1891. We see that this did not take place.)
Young Women Journal Vol. 3 PG 263-264, Joseph Smith Described, “the inhabitants of the moon as being about six-foot tall, dressed like Quakers, and living to be about 1000 Years Old.
(History of the Church, Vol. 5, page 394) The United States Government to be overthrown in a few years.
All of the predictions were made in the mid 1800s.
