Some would suggest that the Baptist Church first began in Europe.  One of the founders of the movement was John Smyth who experienced the baptismal rite along with others (1609) while in Holland.  The Baptists joined the Puritans as both groups immigrated to America (1620 to 1640 C.E.).  The views of Puritans and Baptists fell at odds.  Roger Williams, a Puritan Minister, banished the Baptists from the colony.  Consequently, the first Baptist church in America was established in Providence Rhode Island in 1639 C.E.  A few years later, John Clarke established the second Baptist church in Newport, Rhode Island.
