What influences people when choosing their religion or world view?

People are influenced by all kinds of things, often things they don't even realize, likely, when ending up with their belief system.  (Or lack of.)  What kinds of things influence our views of the world, and how it must work?  It doesn't have to be a religious view, but everyone does have a view of how things work, essentially.

Most people at least in the U.S. have their religion (chosen for them) during their childhood by their parents. In some instances babies are baptized.
Once they become adults most people stick with what they know. Very few people sample a number of faiths and then make a final selection.
My views are shaped by observation, studying not only the bible but also how it came to be during the canonization process where certain books were left out and why...etc Ultimately I reached the conclusion that: God made man and man made religion.
