Can someone explain to me if most Christians follow Leviticus.

It is my minimally informed belief that most Christians do not follow Leviticus because it was either A) part of the old testament or B) Was not written for Gentiles. I know that the majority of the laws in it are not followed by Christians, yet when I hear the most common argument against being gay, it comes from Leviticus. So can someone please explain, is it picking and choosing or is there a reason Christians cling to this line about gay people, but not the rest of it? I genuinely don't get it, and my hubby (Christian) says he has never followed the old testament, just new testament.

I seem to have been doing that most of my life. None of it makes sense to me. All seems a bit like hoping and dreaming, and I like defined lines. I need logic to understand. My dad was "Christian", I just don't understand so many religions.

Peeps:  To answer your question, Christians (Disciples of Christ or Apostles)," do not follow the 613 laws (Leviticus) given in Old Testament unless they were carried over into the New Covenant which is anything written after Acts 1 in the New Testament!

Although The Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are listed in the New Testament section of the Bible, they were written under the "LAW!"   We (Believers) are now under a New Covenant and The Ten Commandments' use are mentioned in Galatians 3:24-25 which says they "are our Schoolmaster" when coming unto Christ" or babes in Christ!  As Scripture further states, "After "faith" is come there is no need for a "Schoolmaster!" {paraphrasing} This is why we do not follow the 613 laws in Leviticus unless carried over under New Covenant (After Acts 1)!

Within your question is a question concerning gays when Christians give Scriptures saying "it is an abomination to the Lord."  I regret to inform them that the law speaking against the act of being gay was carried over into the New Testament under the New Covenant!

Romans 1:24-32 which says in part "Wherefore, God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies, between themselves; (v26) For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections; for even their women did exchange the "natural use" for that which is "against" nature; (v27) And likewise also the men, leaving the "natural use" of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, "men with men" working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was fitting. (V28) An even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God "gave them over to a reprobate mind," to do those things which are not seemly, (v31) Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful; (v32) Who, knowing the judgment of God, that they who commit such thing are "worthy of death," not only do the same but have pleasure in them that do them."

Therefore, there is no "picking and choosing," but one Scripture they recall and do not dedicate themselves to studying the New Testament or the New Covenant that is effective NOW!

Your husband should remember II Timothy 3:16 "ALL Scripture is given by inspiration of God.."  If one doesn't read the Old Testament, missing the genealogy of Jesus Christ (GOD) in addition to the MANY GLORIES of GOD throughout the Old Testament; the Psalms, the allegories, etc!  Wonderful reading!

Here is a paragraph form gotquestions dot org:

"The New Testament says that homosexuality is a “shameful lust” (Romans 1:26), a “shameful act,” an abandonment of “natural relations” (Romans 1:27), a “wrongdoing” (1 Corinthians 6:9), and “sexual immorality and perversion” (Jude 1:7). Homosexuality carries a “due penalty” (Romans 1:27), “is contrary to the sound doctrine” (1 Timothy 1:10), and is listed among the sins that bar people from the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9)"

I think the arguments you hear against being gay are probably coming form the New Testament.
Btw, I am a Non-Christian who went to a Christian school, ages ago.

Today there are over 40,000 "Christian" denominations. All kinds of people claim to be Christians. You could get hundreds of different answers if enough Christians responded to the question.

Main stream Christianity has in time changed their minds about many things that are written in the bible. You need not be a trained professional with one of the many vocational positions in the church to understand black and white print. There is nothing in the bible that says "gays" (your words) are a correct life choice, physically or spiritually. If you don't believe the bible then do what you to. The bible believers pick and chose to suit there religion.

Even our academia when teaching Bio 101, 102 etc. know what male and females are made for. Regardless of what you could find in writing to refute the desire to live the life style or support it people are going to do what they want to do. Psy 101 doesn't overrule bio 101.

Leviticus says a lot of things. I'm sure in the future with the declining morality in America and the rest of the world other things written there will also be challenged. Sons will want to sleep with their hot moms. Fathers will want to be with their daughters etc. All prohibited by scripture as well. But it will be defended by the intellect some how after all we had slavery once and were wrong.

All kinds of things can be done with the body but that doesn't mean it is right to do them. You can agree with Leviticus and do some of the things mentioned there and it doesn't mean you agree with all of them.

There are many that think that Christ having said nothing about the issue makes it is OK to proceed as you like. Well Christ didn't say specifics about a lot of things but that doesn't mean it is OK. Not agreeing with something doesn't mean you are suppose to be nasty and hateful about things either.

The issues with homosexuality actually pre-dates Leviticus in that the first story about it is in Genesis from the time of Abram.
The Angels go down to Sodom to find out if things are really as bad as they think and the men of that city try Homosexual rape on them!
Leviticus was written primarily for the Israelite nation and many of its rules deal with the Priests and how to look after Priests in the community, it isn't geared so much for Christians but does give some good pointers for healthy lifestyles.
The reason Christians are consistent in their speaking out against the Homosexual lifestyle (male and female) is because the book we follow is consistent in its speaking out against it.
You can only defend the lifestyle 'from the Bible' by cutting huge chunks out of the book but I would qualify this by using the words of Jesus, "Let him without sin cast the first stone!"
For me his speaking out against homosexuality was the same as sex outside of marriage which in the Old Testament was also punishable by death! Even in New Testament times it carried serious repercussions (read the story at the start of Matthew).
Just a few thoughts on the subject.

WE can't "cast the first stone," but the Word of God certainly can!  That's why the Scriptures say "Judge RIGHTEOUS judgment" (Jn 7:24) & the only RIGHTEOUS judgment comes from His Words and not ours!

a REAL FOLLOWER of CHRIST cannot follow Lev, because we understand that the law of Moses passed when Jesus FULFILLED SCRIPTURE with His death and resurrection thereby  instituting the NEW COVENANT.
The old testament is the law and acts of the nation of Israel.   It governed the relationship between God and their nation.

The NEW COvenant (Testament) contains the roadmap for the relationship between God, Jesus and the followers of Christ.

Many profess to be Christian but follow some of the jewish laws , yet the scriptures say if you do that  you are then no longer following Christ but have forsaken Him and obligated yourself to then follow ALL OF THE LAWS OF THE JEWS.

ANY person or group (such as 7th day Adventists) that follow ANY of the old testament laws are calling Christ a LIAR and  saying His sacrifice was not sufficient and they are disqualified from being Christ followers.

I use the term Christ follower because the majority of those today that call themselves  Christians , are  church followers that belong to a church (of man) and are man (or woman) followers that GO TO church instead of BEING  as we re called to be THE CHURCH the iglessia of Christ.

choose this day who YOU will follow,  Christ or man?   Remember scripture says NARROW IS THE WAY.

Within the New Testament the Bible also covers about Homosexuals and these people who pracice these activities will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God, but will be thrown into outer dakness or hellfire.
    1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
    1 Timothy 1:9-10
Understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,
    Jude 1:7  ESV
Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
As you can see, God does not change and these people who keep on practicing these practices will be punished by not being able to inherit the kingdom of God.  If Sodom and Gomorrah suffered by destruction and annilation forever, these people may receive the same treatment.
