For Christians only; What is the difference in being religious and being Spiritual ?
What is the difference and which is scripturally correct for a real Christ follower? Scripture references?
Charlie I just love this question because it will allow me to rant a bit. I just love my religion. It is great. But boy o boyo is it different than my spirituality. I just love a good church service. But it is wholly different than my reverence and every morning spent in the word, reflection, meditation and scripture. I love a good group prayer and supplication and confession. But it is completely different than the constant contact and conversation and confession that I have with my Lord all day long.
God has blessed me so that I can enjoy and celebrate communion with others and have a personal special relationship with the Spirit of the Lord.
Charlie the preacher men and women are like you to me. Learned and faithful. True and ultimately kind. There is no way that I can get behind every word they say. But the interconnection and voicing of faith is great. We discern things differently yet both with an eye and heart toward God.
I am an isolationist. It is great for me to get out and have relationships with others of faith. Singing and faith dancing is a fun thing to do with others.
Oh the hypocrisy of religion and organized worship. It is so incorporated. Don't even get me started on Catholics -- I am in my fifth year of catechism study and it is a bit bizarre. But I love the pomp and circumstance of a High Mass in the first church in the Californias. Just religion - I reckon I could take my family to a Captain America movie for entertainment, but I prefer church/religion services. Religion is better time spent than the secular.
I attend services that read the Gospel and then some Pauline, and then the sermon is based on that message. I am baptized in a church and I take communion in a church. My Christian buddies and families like to get together and celebrate in religion. It is better than going to a football game on Sundays. Religion is cool. It focuses our attention onto a good thing.
I cannot speak to spirituality more than I do in my Eric's Sunday Sermons here on HP. It is so personal. My son, in our prayers that we do whenever we get into a car, asked God to see our love. Perhaps we are doing something right. Spirituality is heaven to me. My connection is the Kingdom, right now and right here. It is now time to live in love and spread that good news.
"Religion is better time spent than the secular"
Participating in many religions made me no different than those that are secular. The secular is not part of the Kingdom of God. Sunday religion doesn't cover up Monday to Saturday secular lives.
sunday religion is an abomination. but then all religion is an abomination and outside of true Christianity. Christianity is a Spiritual lifestyle.
How foul that you think you are annointed to pass judgment on my wife and child. Thank God that you are not the judge and jury of the flock. Anyone who does not match up to your expectations and belief are doomed. Wrong Charlie.
eric==I do not know and never mentioned your family and certainly did not judge them. I speak scriptural truth and how it is received is not up to me.
but if the shoe fits--- you know what to do with it. stop twisting what I say
Eric: What is "some Pauline?" Do u not know NC? Jer31:33;Heb8:10;10:16 GOD said HE'D "put laws in hearts & minds" & did that thru Paul who spoke for JESUS! What's Pauline? Not in WORD! Why Communion "making sacrifice?" READ "Hebrews!" Baptism
eric-- I am still trying to digest you rant, when I do I will respond
there is NOTHING good about religion
Eric, you keep thinking you can "get religion" through "studying" man's traditions, schools & seminaries! WRONG! It's not as if you're trying to obtain a law degree! It's "humbleness" to GOD (I Chron 7:14)! One MUST become a "fool" (Matt18:3)
Religious is the worst. Everything revolves around a bunch of rules and regulations. It is very annoying and causes others to run.
Spiritual is what God desires. When spiritual, you don't have to say it. Walk by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh (lust, pride, covetous, hatred, self righteousness, etc.). People will watch you and know that something is different. They tend to look you up when they need advice.
By your permission, a 'nonechristian's" simply answer is " Christ in you"... (Colors.1:27); where the Spirit of God dwells, lives manifesting himself in our words and actions. (John 14:23).
Thus there isn't any room for religion and or search for "right" type of christianity since there are so many different groups and organizations.
mm- what is colors 1:27, in over 40yrs of study I have never heard of it. it certainly is not a scripture reference. I assume you meant Colossians?
I don't know if this one really answers the question but to keep it in context, Paul is talking to "saints" which are Christians. 1:26b comes before 27 Jn 14:23 - key is those who keep His Commandments 1) Love God and 2) Love others sums the Comman
Charlie, you've assumed correctly; my typo forgiven in heaven. ........ G. DIANE NELSON TROTTER, - glory be to YHWH for His Spirit leading in the same direction, by the same understanding. You've prooved the Truth told by Yehoshua confirme by Paul
the difference in being religious and being Spiritual is................................
Religious is man
Spiritual is God
Can man do what God wants? Yes, God's Son the Messiah called us to be doers of the word and then turned around and did it as an example for us to follow. As Diane Trotter mentioned " People will watch you and know that something is different". This is why God's Son had disciples when He was here. This is why we are to be disciples of the Son of God and to teach others to be disciples as well. Walking breathing examples of what the Father wants us to be. Today that can only be done in/with the Son of God because the Father has given Him all power and authority to do so.
... then He delegated the same authority to His 'disciples";then they went-and the Lord worked with them and confirmed- and they went, and went and the disciples were called CHRISTIANOS-anointedians the same anointing the Kingdom of God proclaimed
Charlie, you are like men who have translated & re-translated bible & these proclaimed "Christians" on HP "It goes how you believe or else - "delete!"
One sided discussions w/ONLY those in agreement!
WOW! I KNOW I'm going to get "put out of the synagogue thinking they've done GOD a service" AGAIN (John 16:2), but I MUST TELL TRUTH from HIS WORD!
Religion (as defined by WORD and not Webster's definition) is defined in James 1:27 "...to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." Now I ask, do we not do these things in the flesh? What is "Spiritual" about visiting someone and having a "mind" to "keep one's self unspotted from the world?" However, how can we do either without the HELP of the Holy Spirit? Yet, both are "works" in the flesh!
Paul said in Acts 26:5 "I lived as a Pharisee, the strictest sect of our "religion." So "religion" was something you showed (in the flesh; "dead works") in the first century. You had to physically obey the "laws" therein which is TOTALLY different than the New Covenant because it is TOTALLY "Spiritual!" The Bible teaches for believers to expose the evils of false religion (Romans 16:17; Titus 1:10-13; Ephesians 5:11; Jude 1:3); modern-day apostates in the churches are saying, “Let's all unite together and set aside all doctrinal differences.” This is a LIE and why I continue to be "put out of the synagogue" or "deleted!"
But thanks be to GOD, Who established a New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:33; Hebrews 8:10; 10:16) in which there are no more "dead works" but Salvation by GRACE through FAITH (Ephesians 2:8-9)!
Galatians 3:24-25 says "Wherefore the law was our SCHOOLMASTER to bring us unto Christ, that we may be justified by FAITH. But AFTER "FAITH" is come, WE NO LONGER NEED a SCHOOLMASTER."
IF one is not a "babe in Christ" and has come "unto Christ," we are "justified by FAITH" and "NO LONGER NEED a "SCHOOLMASTER" (or Law which is "dead works")!
Under the New Covenant which became effective in Acts, before enactment, JESUS "commanded" the disciples to "WAIT" (Acts 1:4) for "Spiritual" HELP "which we had heard from HIM" in John 14:26 and 16:13 to relieve us from "dead works!" Ephesians 2:8-9 says "For by GRACE are ye saved through FAITH; and that NOT OF YOURSELVES: it is the GIFT of GOD: Not of ("dead") works, LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST!"
Consequently, if one didn't "WAIT" (Acts 1:4) for HELP (John 16:13) from the HOLY SPIRIT (aka JESUS "in my Name" John 14:26), they are NOT "Spiritual" and are only "leaning to "their own" understanding" (Proverbs 3:5)!
Therefore, Religion is "dead works" and Spirituality is HELP from JESUS!
Being religious refers to the religion one belongs. For Christians it is be belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Being spiritual, refers to one's inner feelings. Thus, a Christian might might only feel the spirit in a church with a quiet environment, and other in a church that is tongue-speaking, clapping and shouting. - (Romans 14)
A person who attends a church that is quiet and lasts maybe an hour, might be described as non-religious. A person who attends church on Sunday might be described as non-spiritual. However, for Christians, religious is simply accepting Jesus Christ as your lord and savior. Spiritual, is where the spirit leads you.
What is Celefoe's religion? Religious is believing in Jesus Christ. If one believes in Christ one can be described as religious - not atheist. So, I might be a quiet Christian. That does not mean that I am not spiritual.
angele-- you have done a great job describing the churches of men. but the new testament says much differenlty for those that profess to follow Christ. your statement "in a church" shows you do not understand what the true church of JC really is
People can religiously go to church - not missing a Sunday and tithing. It is religious but it does not mean the person is a Christian. Sleeping in the garage does not make one a car any more than going to church makes one a Christian.
Dianne-- thanks. I am now deleting erics answers. After 5 yrs I cant take any more of his non-scriptural drivel and un-Godly concept of love He would rather argue than have correct scriptural concepts. I onLy care for CORRECT UNDERSTANDING.
Sleeping in the garage does not make one a car, any more than going to church makes one a Christian. I believe in Jesus Christ, so let us rephrase. Sleeping in a garage does not make one a car any more than going to the mosque makes one Islamic.
ap- it takes a lot more than just believing in Jesus to be a Christian. it takes repentence, learning His ways, doing them and much more. Of course if you go to church then you are admitting you are not the church, which is a requirement.
Angele, I didn't realize this was specifically about you. I was responding based on the question that was asked.
religion means the religion in which one believes.spiritual means the spirit in every person's mind .I mean the holly spirit.
