Not a Bible believing kind of guy myself. So let me look at it from another viewpoint. It seems that the Universe is made from two occurrences; Matter and consciousness. We know that matter cannot be destroyed, it can be altered but not destroyed. It therefore seems logical to assume that our consciousness cannot be destroyed. It may alter but will never be destroyed.
I'm a Christian, but I have to admit that the bible is not as rationale as the The Bagavad Gita of Hinduism. It tells us quite clearly that the Soul is immortal... that neither wind, fire, water and so forth, can affect the Soul. The Soul is immortal and part and parcel of God or Consciousness, the same thing we call Spirit, with a capitol 'S.'
We are soul's and the body is simply an instrument or temple of the Soul.
