What is everyone's common knowledge of ET?

I think that people in general believe that ET is a person from another world, who's intelligence is a lot more superior than ours. Otherwise if people believe that ET was of a human form, then we would be actually addressing our own existence and would probably dismiss the beliefs of life on other planets.
